12v sockets plus wiring dash cam

Featured Replies

Hi All.

Having recently acquired my 2011 TDI Scout, I have a couple of questions. Both the front and rear 12v sockets are permanently live. This does seem rather odd to me and have never had a car with this. Could someone confirm if this is correct or I have a fault. I also want to wire direct to the fuse box a dash cam, I was going to find and use the 12v socket fuse but if this is permanently live will obviously not do the job. if any one has a link for info on wiring a dash cam it would be gratefully received.

Power sockets on my 2008 scout are permanently live and I believe this is the same for all Mark 2 Octavia's. I used a multimeter to find a switched fuse to add my dash cam too.

Thanks Anddenton. Not me then , bit irritating not sure what the idea of keeping them live is? have found a few bits on hard wiring, looks like people use the rear wiper fuse which is switched live. So will have a go at that.

I've used 2 piggyback fuses, 1 switched live and 1 permanent live, connected both to a 2 way switch so the camera can just be on with the ignition or left on when the engine is off, I. e. At the supermarket etc

Thanks for all the replies. All bits ordered to hard wire into fuse board.

I wired my camera to the switched feed in the rear of the courtesy light socket by the mirror (swich left on and bulb removed for that side.). It requires soldering but the big advantage is very short lead and no need to hide a long cable around the windscreen.

Surely there is a simpler way.

I'd be leaning to a switch on the centre console.

The easier way is to use a piggyback fuse holder and run the cable up the A pillar to the camera, half an hour max to fit once you realise how to remove the trim pieces.

Take a look at EBay item 312133677777 for the fuse holder.

I have front and rear car cams powered via the front accessory socket using an extension double multi socket, hiding the wiring under the trim, I can insert or remove the plug as required.

Got the cam hard wired yesterday, used a piggy back fuse holder, and took an earth off of one of the body work screws. Ran the wire down the A pillar and into the fuse board.
