Mar 14 Fabia TDI 105 long life servicing rip-off?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Just had a quote from a "trusted" independent garage to do a major service on my Fab TDI 105 and he has quoted between 350-425.  The Fab was registered in March 14, has done 50k miles and has had the first minor service and a second major service and is on the long life servicing (i.e. 20k m or 24 months) as it rarely if ever gets used for trips less than 40m at a time.  Just booked her in for this service and enquired about the probably price and was told between 350-425.  This of course includes an oil change and all the usual stuff but in addition includes a timing belt (every 4yrs?) and water pump (i think, sorry I have forgotten but it was water related).  Bearing in mind these are "scheduled" and not assessed parts as he has not yet seen it I was wondering if this seems reasonable?

Skoda garages have a fixed price of £269 so i thought it would be cheaper than that but then I am reluctant to take it to them in case they surreptitiously "fix" my car and make it losses power!

So with the admittedly little info would you be shopping around for another garage or go with the one you think you can trust?

Thanks in advance and apologies for gaps, if you require any more info i will try to provide but I am not all that knowledgeable about cars and am just looking for a general steer on this from you far more knowledgeable folks!

Seems reasonable but worth shopping around

Skoda quote £469 to change timing belt kit and water pump on my Octavia 1.9  tdi plus cost of service and mot so I'd have thought you quote was in the very least ' reasonable ' !!

Slightly confuse which service you are talking about.

If it is now at 50k miles after 4 years, then presumably the 20k came up under 24 months, and the 40k miles would have been next interval, so why does it now need another service 10k miles later, or did you reach the 40k two years ago and have only done 10k in last 24 months

How many months ago was last service, and at what mileage was it last serviced.   This matters because it affects what is due to be done at next service

That looks reasonable to me compared to what I payed at a main dealer for the same service.  I had a load of other stuff done as well but I think the belt plus water pump element alone was around £500.  Cam belt is due for change every 4yrs or 80k (??) miles.  It is wise to change the water pump at the same time as most of the cost of the belt change is labour,  water pumps don't last for ever and are driven by the cambelt.  So for the cost of the pump you save a double labour cost.  Plus, it the water pump does start to leak it damages the cambelt...

The dealer where I took mine (DM Keith, Bradford) was well aware that many folk don't want the emissions modification so no worry that it may be done without specific consent.

Thanks for this feedback, that is reassuring.  I must admit the garage in question "feels" trustworthy and has done some, what I think is, good work in the past so I would like to trust him if possible.

Sorry should have included that in the original post.  I will check the service log and post later as I am at work at present.  In short though 1st service was around a year at 14k, second service was about 3yrs in Sep 16 at 28k and now this service is due at 48k as the 20k limit has been reached before 2 years.

Thanks, that is reassuring.  I am a real tight wad so i just wanted to make sure that is was at least competitive and not completely out there!

Glad to have been of some help, in my opinion ( indeed experience from the past ) if you feel confident in a garage local Indy or main dealer therein lies half the battle, however a trustworthy Indy with the ability to speak to the same people year in year out wins hands down over a main dealers for me every time BUT be warned as cars become more complexed especially electronics visits to dealerships for diagnostics will be a necessary evil ........ and it won't be a cheap venture

just for info, there is a lot of confusion on this model for the belt and pump as it changed twice.  For your car age the interval should be 5yrs or 120k miles, so it is not due until next year.

if you plan to keep the car for a while, then the recommendations from the EA189 diesel gurus is to use the normal servicing and get the oil and filter changed every 7000miles, the long-life service was created to satisfy fleet costing.
