MPG

Featured Replies

Had my 1.5 TSi DSG about a week, so only 148 miles on the clock. My commute is 9 miles one-way. So far around 30mpg, although yesterday cylinder de-act was on quite a lot and it was up to 37 mpg on the way home. Not bad and am v impressed by how fast the engine warms up.

How fast is the oil getting to an indicated 50*oC or up to around 90*oC.

Is is the oil showing as at 90*oC by the time you have done 9 miles?

Have not ticked the box for oil temp but can do so. But it is probably at water temp within half a mile to a mile.

Slightly different engine, but my Golf R's oil is up to 100 degrees within 5 miles of mixed 30/40/NSL.

Drove the wife's manual version of your car today at 5,300miles and averaged 57.1MPG on usual 26 mile commute (70% motorway ACT working well).:D

Auto Express tested the latest 306bhp Golf R with DSG against the cheaper Civic Type R GT and although Golf was quicker on the irrelevant Grand Prix start the Civic was quicker in most in-gear acceleration tests due to it's lighter weight and more responsive engine. Both quite thirsty Golf averaged 31.0MPG and Civic 31.7MPG.

With that amount of performance I would have been delighted with those figures for mpg, horses for courses as they say and I doubt if buyers of these cars have mpg high on their preferences.

My Octy has 4bhp less than the Golf, 14bhp less than the Civic but more importantly 67NM of torque more than both of them yet has averaged 39.3MPG over the first 10,000miles.But it is lighter and bigger than both of them. Oh also alot cheaper as well.:blush

Bloody hell, time to set fire to the Golf and buy a Civic. Amazingly I didn’t buy the car for it’s MPG, and I didn’t buy the Civic because it looks like the work experience boy has has free reign in the parts department with a rather large tube of superglue.

Manual VRS245 weighs 1370KG, Civic Type R 1380KG and guess 5 door DSG 4WD Gof R must weigh at least 1450KG (that's a guess so am sure someone will correct me. Don't understand what the 212KG refers to!

I would also buy the Golf if I didn't need a practical hatchback with a useful 590 litre boot and loads of rear legroom. Hate both the exterior/interior of the Civic, the Titanium gear knob will be too hot in summer and too cold to use in winter unless owners like wearing racing gloves. It's also got a sub-standard 7" touchscreen, but this thread was about MPG I think!:notme:

Skoda gross weight 1912 kg type r gross weight 1700kg hence the 212kg difference,

Also says kerbweight is 1370KG. Gross weight is the maximum weight a vehicle can carry including luggage. My figures were kerbweight because the Civic only has 4 seatbelts and therefore can only carry 3 passengers plus the driver. This is basic maths.Fuel weighs 1KG per litre so an Octavia and Golf with a 50 litre fuel tank carry a maximum of 50KG of fuel but the Civic has a smaller 42 litre tank so can carry a maximum of 42KG of fuel.

Also I was 2KG out on the kerbweight of the Civic.WOW !!!!!!!!!!!:notme:

Don’t let it worry you.

I have clearly angered the Skoda gods with a comment on how quickly the oil heats up in a VAG engine variant. I will keep to the shadows from now on.

The difference between GROSS vehicle weight and KERBWEIGHT is the amount the vehicle can carry based on its suspension and tyres without the tyres rubbing on the bodywork(wheel arches). Therefore the Civic can carry 318KG of people and luggage, whereas the Octavia can carry more weight at 542KG. Hopefully this is clear now. No need to apologise for your not knowing the difference!

That doesn’t worry me either.

From a cold start today observed the following oil temps on our 1.5Tsi manual Karoq;

50 degrees C at 4 miles.

60 degrees C at 6 miles.

68 degrees C at 8 miles.

73 degrees C at 10 miles.

77 degrees C at 12 miles.

81 degrees C at 14 miles.

88 degrees C at 16 miles.

On the return journey home having sat in the warm sunshine all day got upto 83 degrees C after 5 miles, so seems to be affected by ambient temperature as well. Hope this helps answer your question.

Pretty much as 1.4 TSI 180ps Min Twincharger Euro 5's do in warmer weather / summer time do.

You could double those times when temps around 0*oC.

Had to remember that lot when I was driving then scribble it down when I got to work. I should have been on Crypton Factor!

It also averaged 56.4MPG witha cold engine and 58.4MPG going home when the engine oil warmed up quicker which is interesting.

I just pay attention to things like that, listen to the engine, watch the indicated coolant temp then the oil temp & pay attention to fuel consumption in different weathers and with different tyres and after driving the same kind of cars on similar journeys years / season round get to know it.

Particularly important if you are driving various cars that have possible dodgy engines that the oil used is important in so checking Variable Service Long Life Oil against not Long Life oil can tell you a lot.

Seeing how VW508 will be in TSI's in winter will be interesting at least to me.

  • 2 weeks later...

Wife's Karoq SEL 1.5Tsi 6 months old tomorrow and about to hit 200 hours driving time. First long journey down to London last weekend, covered 523miles on that tank using 49.27litres or 10.84gallons at an average of 48.25mpg. Car has now done 5,946miles.
