Engine Management light.

Featured Replies

I have an 02 reg Fabia 1.4mpi and recently the engine management light has come on and stayed on.

Now it still sounds sweet and is pulling the same as ever, and I'm very very unflush with the cash atm. I've had experience with other cars where these lights come on, and they're not always a good indicator of anything of any severity.

So... question I guess I'm asking is whether it should worry me enough to get it looked at immediately, and if its likely to be an expensive job to get it checked?

Best bet would probably be to go to a dealer, report that you've got an engine fault light and ask for them to provide you with a quote for fixing it.

They will then need to hook up the diagnostic equipment and tell you what's wrong, and then provide a quote on how much it would cost them to fix.

From this, there's also a good probably you'll be able to figure out how important it is as to whether to leave it until you can afford it, and how much it's going to cost you.

If the engine's running fine, etc. then I suspect it's probably a sensor of some sort which has failed...

Thats an absolutely corking idea. They'll need to diagnose to give me a quote, and their diagnosis will give me the indication of whether it needs doing.

Thankyou, this shall be done this weekend, motivation permitting :)

In the meantime if the light starts flashing at you stop immediately

Not sure on Skodas but on GM cars solid light means ok to drive but get it checked, flashing means stop!

(maybe check the owners manual and see if it says the same?

Or find someone with VAG-COM........ If you state the area you live in, some kind soul may offer to plug thier laptop into your socket.

You could always do a quick check to see if the brake lights are working too.

That is a common problem.

Sounds daft I know.

Last time I said that to someone I think they thought I was on something.

But quick check

Well, I'm in Newcastle, so if any such kind soul exists, I'd appreciate that no end. If not, i'll go with the go to get a quote idea.

Brake lights seem fine.

Its all a bit of a mystery, as everything seems to be spot on.

Sorry to bring this up again, but after having had the problem diagnosed as a faulty charcoal filter solenoid (whatever that is) and not having time to get it sorted, the management light has now gone off.

Would you consider this to have sorted itself, and been a temporary problem, or would you still worry enough to get it 'fixed' anyway?

AFAIK the charcoal filter is designed to "catch" the fuel vapour from the fuel tank that may occur because of expansion and the like...then when you start the engine, air is drawn in through the charcoal filter to pass this fuel vapour into the engine...basically, it's an alternative to venting fuel vapour to atmosphere.

Not sure where the solenoid comes in...could be that which controls the flow of air into the charcoal cannister?

If it were me, I'd be inclined to leave it and see if the problem reoccurs or if I had any running problems, and get it fixed if it did...however, I can accept no liabiity if this advice turns out to be wrong... ;)

Lol. Nice disclaimer.

I did have the helpful suggestion from someone at work that maybe its still broken, but now the management light is broken as well. So called friends! pfft.

The car is, as it has always been, running sweet with no problems, so I'm inclined to leave it I think.
