Skoda Fabia 1.2 HTP (2006) Exhaust

Featured Replies

Hi

Just after a bit of advice with regards to my exhaust on the above.

On the MOT in March this year, I was advised there was a slight blowing but not to worry at the point, wait till it sounds like a little Ferrari then bring it back.

This is what was said on the MOT advisory "Central front exhaust has a minor leak of the exhaust gases front silencer section"

It has got a little louder but I have decided to sort something rather than wait for it to cause a major issue. I took it to a local exhaust centre yesterday, they put it on the ramps so I could have a look and it is leaking from near the front silencer box, they said a replacement would probably be about £195.

I am willing to have it done if need be as it is a good little car but I have to think of the value, but I was wondering if anybody had any experience of getting an exhaust welded, the small hole seems to be close to the front silencer, I assume where it joins together.

I have bought some Holts gum as I thought I might give that ago but I have been thinking about the possibility of welding if this is possible.

Many thanks for any help.

My experience of weldi g silencers is they blow through easily.

You could get a silencer way cheaper than that and it would be easy to fit yourself.

Welding might work, gum won't.  Take it to a back-street garage, preferably with someone from Poland on the staff.

Thanks for the replies, being in Blackpool you would think I know of a back street garage that would do a quick cash in hand welding job, but unfortunately, I don't, I think I need to do some research.

I did see the part I need from Europarts for about £70/£75, but I don't have the facilities or knowledge to change it, mores the pity.

I think I need to start asking around a bit.

Welding such thin steel is nearly impossible, it's like trying to TIG tinfoil, however brazing does work but hardly anyone knows how to do that any more.

Frankly if it's rusty then it'll just go somewhere else after you've fixed it, you might as well replace it, just get a few more quotes, £195 is a bit strong for such a cheap part and an easy job.

Many thanks for all the replies, I'm away next week but have somebody coming round the week after to look about welding the area.

If that is not possible I will get some more quotes to replace the whole pipe which I think would be the better solution, I agree with sepulchrave, I did not think it would be so expensive to replace, I have seen the part on-line and it did not seem so bad, I would not attempt it myself as I don't have the facilities and would probably create a bigger problem.

I managed to get a photo of where I think the problem is though.

Thanks

Martin

That's just the sleeve clamp joining front to middle pipes which has rotted through? Or do you mean that area right up next to the box?

Had to replace the clamp on ours last weekend funnily enough. Got one on Amazon Prime, ordered Sat morning delivered just after lunch on Sunday. Will give you a link shortly. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CJO8U3Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hi Wino

Thanks for the link, the clamp does look a bit rusty but it is the area right next to the box where the leak is.

I am going to see if it could be welded, or if it is worth it if not, will be getting some more prices for replacement.

Remind me Martin, is your HTP the 6-valve or the 12-valve version? BMD or BME?

Hi Wino

It's the 12-valve engine, BME engine.

I've checked on Europarts again and with their daily discounts, if I have got the right part, which I think I have, I could buy it for £66.29, I may also then buy the part you linked to me which may as well be done at the same time,  which makes the price quoted for fitting seem very expensive and although I don't think I would fit it myself, I might be better to look at getting quotes before looking at welding.

In that case it looks like the part number you need to match is 6Q0253091T, there's one here for a good price, by the look of what I can see on ebay for the same search.

You'll definitely be needing a new sleeve clamp to go with it, the one in your photo is no way re-usable.

I had just edited my reply as I thought I had found a good price, your price looks even better.

I think once I am back, I might buy that section of the exhaust and of course a new clamp as I agree it does not re-usable and a set of ramps and have a go myself, for the price it would probably cost the same for it to be welded.

Thanks for the link though, that really helps.

Just to update that I had the front section replaced today, including the flexi and I also replaced the clamp.

I got another quote for£150, fitted, with a 3 year warranty and it was done on the same day.

Happy with that and it will last longer than welding.

i got quoted by a back street garage for 165 fitted for the same part. i guess it is not far off from what you are paying, i thought maybe i was being lied to.
