Facelift satnav can't say road numbers properly!

Featured Replies

Just replaced my 3 year old vRS with a brand new one, and it's come with a much nicer infotainment system (not sure if its Amundsen or Bolero).

However, satnav is now pronouncing (UK) road numbers as 'B one thousand, two hundred and thirty four' rather than 'B 1 2 3 4'

I've gone through all the menu options and can't see any way to change this. Minor annoyance I know, but it winds me up!

Anyone got any ideas how to change it???

Will be Amundsen if it’s got knobs on, Columbus is the bigger 9.2” screen with no knobs,  Bolero looks like Amundsen but has no nav.

I cant help with your actual question unfortunately, but I’d guess my FL Amundsen does the same, I know at least one of the nav things I use does, I mainly use Apple maps these days.

Don't think it's possible, it's likely just how to the text to speech interprets it. For what it's worth, pre-FL Columbus also does the same.

Ok Thanks, not a problem, I'm sure I'll get used to it, and glad it's not just me.. Everything else is so much better than the old one :)

I don't mind when she pronounces stuff wrong - that's usually quite funny!

My Amundsen does it too :)

Double post sorry!!

I laughed other week when it read out place same as the abbreviated version on roadsign. Place was Stourport on Severn but it just called it "Sport":D

Because the Text-To-Speech algorithm that they used when compiling the firmware is set to US English not UK English?

The Audi sat navs have done this for many years - at least on my previous B7 RS4 (which was built in 2006) it did this from day one.

The Google sat nav on my Android gave a weird road number in Derbyshire. As an occasional cyclist I twigged it was giving a number from the national cycle network.

My now defunct Garmin would tell me to "turn right on to Dukes Drive" in a rural setting . What?  Also, more importantly, it was the A6. I told Garmin and they added A6 to the verbals.

The verbalisation of the road numbers is a bit irritating but tolerable since the numbers are at least correct, unlike when I was told to leave the M74 at junction A74 the other day, which bears no relation to the actual junction number nor any of the roads at that junction - puzzling.

Being told to go towards Downham Em-Katy recently was confusing until it dawned it was spelling out the abbreviaton Mkt.

For some reason the pronunciation of a short "o" seems to be problematic/Americanised and comes out more like "ar" eg. Darncaster, Narttingham, and my favourite one, Turn around when pARssible which always reminds me of Kenny Everett's "All done in the best pARssible taste"!

Mine doesn't

For B6027 it will say Bee, six, zero, two, seven.

Lee

I was working in Huntingdon a couple of years ago and driving on the A141 to the hotel from the factory, the sat nav said 'follow the A141for 1 mile'. sounded like follow the A14141 mile.;)

Yeah mine has a road name like a444 prounnced something like a fer four fer fource fer or something lke that, can't quite recall but its woeful.
Car has tourettes lol

Mine (2004 Amundsen) can't say Manchester properly, says it as 'Manchister'. It's like an episode of East Enders.  I once had a hand-me down Prius company car and that SatNac couldn't pronounce Dumbarton, said it as 'dumb arton'.

My updated ECE2018/2019 maps Columbus now tells me to follow the road to Soton Docks rather that Southampton like it used to. Pronounces it as "Sotton".

Proper English like wot she is spoke. :D

Edited by YMe

Soton is the abbreviation commonly painted on the roads and shown on road signs. Not enough room for SOUTHHAMPTON. GIGO.

You should hear what it makes of Irish townlands .................

Irish townlands?  Tell us more.:wait:

Even with the latest 2018/2019 maps my MIB1 Amundsen still pronounces A361 as A - three - six - one.

Maybe this is a MIB1 vs. MIB2 difference?
