Golf 2.0 GT TDI

My mates about to get one of these as a company car - is it gonna be noticeably quicker than my standard vRS?

Whats Jabba's number...?

Dad's got one.... its quick - but I don't think will be noticeably quicker than a standard vRS - Evenly matched I say - Both weigh similar, both will probably be around same power anyway.

www.jabbasport.co.uk I think it is. ;)

I'd say both on a par, having driven both!....in the VRS you get the kick @ 1900rpm and the accompanying tidal wave of torque but in the new 2.0TDI 140 its more linear and smooth so even though you'll still be going just as quick its less noticeable IMO:)

Agree with Chris

I have driven one with the DSG box,( it is a very nice combination) also dont forget the furby is smaller & lighter.

I can say with 100% confidence, the torque kick in the furby gives it the edge for acceleration, and once you have the distance between you & the golf, it doesnt reel in the gap. :)

So Furby with a 140PD & DSG please :D ( even if there are no other options ).

Got to drive said car over the weekend (Golf GT TDi 4 Motion)- very smoth power delivery - much more tempting to reach red line than the fabia, but at low revs is totally gutless. I was in 3rd @ 20MPH and although the furby would be sluggish the pickup would b good but it took about 5 (long) seconds for the golf to pick up speed.

V-Max is very similar (Apparenly at indicated 130 he had 'more to give but thats balls - all done on private road) (Mr Focus RS was probably wondering why a family and small diesel hatchback weren't disapearing) and acceleration is similar but the furby did make ground though negligible.

Enough of performance. The golf is on a 06 plate and was 1000 miles old (1 week). It felt taught and solid over bumps but the refined nature of travel isn't matched by the furb. Great Bose sound system - loud and 10 speakers!

Gear change very slick- great short shift in there.

The 4 wheel drive was fun, but it didn't fill me with confidence. 1st understeer, then rear wheels get traction and then 4 wheel drift with power delivery favouring back end. Give me simple understeer any day!

Overall a great car - but for £7500 over the furby - is it worth it? No, unless you have the money to burn in which case yes.

Get me? good...

PS Kent police have undercover vectras which easily blend into background...

Haven't they just put the 170 into the GT TDi?

If they have you're going backwards sunshine...

Company car drivers love the 2.0 TDI as the tax is relatively low compared to any decent powered petrol engine. Can be had for 15 grand so not £7.5k more than the Fabia vRS. Performance should be similar, handling might be a bit better as the Golf MkV chassis is excellent.

Stevrs - nope new one has the 16 valve 2.0 TDi 138 BHP engine in...

greg - dunno where you got the £15k price from. Manufacturers start at £19100!

They are about £16k for the 3 door version from various net brokers

greg - dunno where you got the

Methinks next car may be a Golf!

I've always preferred Polos, but at that price!

The worthy Fabia may be just a temporary abberation:)

The 170 is going to be available later on this summer when the 170 TSI petrol also joins the range. Looks like VW are going to have 3 GT options, there is limited info just been put onto VWs website last week.

The face lift the GT TDI gets also makes it look a lot better.

Having said all that, you can get hold of a six month old Leon 140 TDI or an even newer 185 bhp TFSI at the moment for just over 14k.

There's a small review of the 170 GT TDi in Top Gear Magazine that doesn't really say anything!

My next company car will be a choice between the Golf GT TDi 170 5 Door (4 Motion if Poss') or the Octy 2 vRS 170 (If it is released in the UK). Tough choice :orb_scare
