What it says on the tin, really; recently my oil warning light came on, flashed a few times, made a really loud intermittent beeping sound, and then turned off again. This happened several times during a journey, but actually stopped after a little while. I checked the oil level, and its fine, so I reckon it's an issue with the oil pressure sensor/switch (I did get an OBD tool, but that came up as no error codes, so I'm really in the dark here). I have a new filter (while I'm down there, I may as well change that too) and a new switch... but I can't find them anywhere in my engine! I've watched what feels like every youtube video there is, and the strange thing is, none of the videos I see show engines that look like mine. In all the youtube videos, the filters and switches are relatively easily accessible from under the bonnet, but there's absolutely nothing similar under my bonnet.

Does anyone here have/had a Fabia 1.6 TDI, and be willing to show me on photos where these things are? Or what I'm looking for? I was looking for over 4 hours earlier, the batteries on my light have run out!

Oil filter on my 1.6tdi octavia CAYC is a cartridge type and location is at front of engine. There should be a round plastic domed housing with a large plastic moulded nut on top.

As Alasdair1 said. Oil Filter is a cartridge type (not the spin on metal canister you may be accustomed to on petrol engines). It is accessed from the top on this model and you will need a 32mm hex socket (not the 12 point version supplied in many socket sets as these can round off the plastic "nut" on the top of the housing.) and an extension bar on your wrench to reach it (the one I use is about 10 inches long). If I remember correctly you may need to dismount a bracket above the filter in order to get a clear space to insert the filter straight and vertical.

There is an oil temperature and level detector mounted on the bottom of the sump.

An oil pressure swich is mounted on the cylinder head (probably need to remove inlet air pipe to get at it.)

There is a Haynes manual for this model - plenty of the "paperback" version available on eBay, or "premium" version (hardback and better quality paper and pictures) for twice the price from Haynes themselves. I will now attempt to attach some pics from the manual which may help you.

PS. Note that the new filter element is marked "TOP" and is fitted the right way. Torque the cover to 20 or 25 Newton Metres when refitted.

Be sure to use oil to VW spec 507.00. I use Castrol Edge 5-30 LL.

My old 1.9tdi the filter and top came out no bother. My newer 12 plate 1.6tdi is a pain in the a?? you have to remove wiring and a stainless pipe to get the filter out. Thats progress for you

I did make a rookie mistake yesterday and drained the oil before I'd made sure I could find everything, so I did have to put new oil in without changing the filter over - bad of me, I know! I'm at a wedding this weekend, and thankfully the oil change on its own seemed to have helped, as there wasn't a peep out of the warning light for the whole 2hr journey down.

Once I'm back at home with my tools I'll get the car back up on the axle stands, drain the oil again, and have another crack at switching out the filter and pressure switch.

@Alasdair1 I did have a little look in my engine and I think I can see mine based off your image - it does indeed look like it's going to be an absolute pain in the a** to get to! But that's ok, I have nothing but time, and no children around to hear me swear 😅

Reckon as the filter is high up in engine you could replace without draining new oil. As for the sensor not sure but if your quick you shouldnt loose to much if its leaking when removed.

I don't recommend attempting to replace filter without draining oil, you'd finish up with a lot of oil on the drive. Bite the bullet and do it properly would be my advice.

Several weeks (and a cracked windscreen replacement, good grief my luck with this car is shocking) later, I am back with an update!

I just wanted to thank everyone again; today I drained the oil, successfully replaced the filter, and put the oil back in! I did try to sort the pressure switch as well, but I just could not get the second clamp on the airflow hose to loosen to be able to take it off completely. I tried to take the air filter and casing out as well to give me a bit of extra room to manoeuvre, but two of the screws on that were stripped, and I have no way of removing them. So if I keep getting an oil warning after changing the filter, I'll need to somehow find the funds to hand the car over to a professional to get the switch changed over. Pray for my wallet.
