1.5TSI DSG MPG

The percentages for the higher speeds are probably correct and can pretty easily be calculated on the wind resistance alone which rises with the square of the velocity.

As for the 55mph being the most economical, thats complete uninformed b******t on their part which probably started when someone wrote, probably truthfully that manufacturers will manipulate the ECU map to make the vehicle hyper efficient at 56mph at the cost of emissions because that was then the speed that was used for the official MPG figures, an early form of dieselgate.

Once when i was really bored (I need to get a life) I decided to see what speed gave the maximum fuel economy and it was 5th gear no throttle let the ECU control the stalling, around 22mph IIRC and it was horrible to experience, there are no vehicles around here so I could do so and I did the mean of opposite runs up and back down the hill to the aéroport, I cant believe that it didnt stall and it cant have done the DMF any favours but the MPG even on the uphill section quickly exceeded the maximum of 99.9mpg that my MK1 Octavia could display, I have done some short one way sections in this MK2 and its been 150+ mpg.

I would not want to be so hard up that I ever have to drive like that again but in extremis the possibility is known, nobody could get better MPG at 55mph than they could at idle in top gear

Agreed but I think Manufacturers are looking at real world driving and not cars driven at ridiculously low speeds or for extremely short periods of time. If they are going to standardise they need to to so at speeds more akin to normal motoring.

I personally only switch the display to ‘car’ after certain journeys to check how it has performed rather than keeping that display on and trying to get the very max which would likely leave a string of collisions and frustrated road rage incidents in my wake.😀

I'll watch out for that then. I've mainly done short trips in town and haven't taken mine on the motorway yet. Only clocked 100+ miles so far and I haven't noticed the light - but that could be me not

  • So around 13,000 miles and since my last post it has improved. I get a very occasional 50+ MPG but mainly mid to high 40's. The majority of my runs are short local ones so I think that brings down the

  • My driving style has "improved" as I am not as fast off the start and stick to 65mph on the motorway with an occasional burst faster to overtake lorries and not cause a que behind me.   It h

Average of 31mph over 2870 miles?

Wife's car and her 26 mile commute takes 1 hour so when I borrow her car my average is usually 37mph so I have lifted her average speed upto 31mph because although I travel 26 miles in another direction my roads are better as you can see from the 36 minute journey time above. My average in the Octavia would be over 40mph if my wife never drove my car but she does and her commute lowers my mpg and average speed. Ying and Yang as they say.:o

Basically anecdotal evidence appears to show that these days Mid Sized Family cars / Crossover / Small SUV petrol engine cars from VW Group / Skoda with just one person in the car do less MPG than larger heavier ones with larger engines.

'Simply Clever' Not.

Well 'Breezy' that economy is impressive!! I see that was in 'Sport' mode - Maybe that's where I am going wrong.

Like I said in an earlier reply, I haven't done many miles yet so perhaps it will improve in the hopefully not too distant future. I have been driving very carefully so far - perhaps I need to open it up and get it loosened up.

It was me shy who posted the 61.7mpg photo. Also managed a best of 63.2mpg on the same commute. No benefit putting it in ECO it doesn't save you any money and slightly better throttle response in SPORT so that's where it stays. Last fill was 24 litres exactly for 264 miles driven so an ACTUAL 50mpg. Car has now covered 17,676 miles though so nicely loosened up.

Hi 'SHY'

Did you notice an improvement after you clocked more miles?

Yes in a word first half a tank when new it was only showing 26mpg which was a bit worrying but once we started the regular commute and after 5,000 miles came the big improvements.

So the economy mode is pretty much useless then 😊

Sport mode it is then 😂

I experimented with all 3 modes in early days and eco mode made no difference. Sports mode seemed as effective as normal but needs to be switched into every journey.

That is because you have the DSG box to protect it when everything is cold. The manual SEL means it always starts in SPORT.:inlove:

There was I thinking this thread was about the DSG version and not the manual?

Perhaps a little self regulation on posting your MPG as manual will perform better and people might forget you are a manual gearbox, as under your I'd all we see is AMD

Our 1.5TSi manual gets traded in today and just crunched the numbers since we bought it on 26/01/2018. Long term maxidot is currently showing 49.1mpg however it has used 1,901.46 litres of 95 octane unleaded which is 418.27 gallons. The car has covered 18,740 miles at 44.80MPG.:)

Good morning

I have to say that I am still on very low miles so it may take some time to see improvement in MPG. I find that mine is returning very low MPG in town compared to our Octavia 1.2 but of course the Karoq is much heavier and is 1.5

Not really much heavier, put a couple of passengers in an Octavia and the difference will be very little.

As to a 1.5 TSI vs a 1.2 TSI in town doing cold starts, maybe short runs and likely using 50 bhp or so that should make little difference.

What is odd is that a 1.0 TSI Karoq might use less fuel than a 1.5 TSI doing the same journeys in a town, or a 2.0 tsi might also use less fuel in town.

Crazy thing was the Octavia didn't change consumption even with four adults and one child and a full boot of luggage. That 1.2 was brilliant especially on long runs, you could back off the throttle and it would just cruise at 80mph all day long.

Iv'e had VW group cars for some thirty years and my 2.0 ltr petrol Passat was more economical than my 1.5 Karoq. I'm not at all impressed with this engine. I do believe that Audi have now dropped it in the A3 and only do the 2.0 ltr which is more economical. My neighbour has the2018  1.5 A3 and thinks its rubbish compared to his 2016 1.4 A3 .

I do like my Karoq but would I buy it again? Maybe not.

So many engines from Euro 4, Euro 5 & even Euro 6 were very good, then discontinued.

eg, 1.4 & 1.9 Diesels. 1.2 Petrols. 1.4 & even 1.6 Petrols.

But then things change and the need to cheat emissions tests in different ways spoils the good consumption cars had previously.

The manual 1.5TSi Karoq weighs 1,378kg in SEL TRIM so the DSG should be just over 1,400kg in front wheel drive or about 1,450kg with 4 wheel drive.

Wife made me buy back her Karoq after just 4 days with a new Octavia RS245 and since then her Karoq has covered another 4,060 miles taking her current mileage to 22,800. Total fuel used now stands at 2,376.62 litres or 522.79 gallons. This gives an actual overall average of 43.61mpg since new on 26/01/2018. Her mileage will fall dramatically now as she can walk to work in 10 minutes and only uses her car for home visits which are too far from her office.:)
