a few questions on the assist system

Featured Replies

Hi all - i got my karoq edition last weekend exactly 12 weeks after the order was placed. so far very satisfied with my choice, it is indeed a great car - however a couple of niggles - has anyone else had these issues or any pointers for me on how to get the best of these features ?
1. Adaptive Cruise Control is generally good, but sometimes just decelerates if the car in front moves to the another lane and road ahead is empty - shouldn't it accelerate if the cruise control was set at a higher speed
2. Lane assist seems very poor and car does not hold to the centre of the lane nor to either of the lane markings
3. in Traffic jam assist mode, the car comes to a full stop in the queue in front is standstill, but when the queue moves the car does not move unless the accelerator is pressed - is this normal ?
4. when the satnav is navigating, the central digital display in the dashboard cannot be changed to other modes without cancelling the navigation, e.g. show speed instead of the navigation

any inputs much appreciated !

Only have an SE Tech but...

1. I'm guessing it's by design and if a car in the lane to the right slows down, ACC seems to detect this and apply brakes. Have had this on the motorway (of course I shouldn't undertake) or on an A road where a car is sat in a right-hand turn filter lane and the ACC slammed on the brakes.

4. On mine, pressing the menu button on the right of the steering wheel (the one with the two rectangles flips it back to whatever it was on before). Or pressing the assistance system button on the steering wheel twice always sends it to the speed / vehicle data mode. Could be different on an edition with Columbus though.

My ACC does occasionally slow down when the road ahead is clear, I just mash the accelerator to get back up to speed.

Lane assist does bounce you around side to side, would be nice if it stayed central.

Traffic jam assist wont start moving unless you press the accelerator or I think you can pull the cruise control stalk instead, only ever used it once in motorway traffic.

The back button on the right of steering wheel will take you out of navigation back to the menu to choose something else.

thanks for the responses, yes it makes sense where the system decelerates if there are cars slowing down on the right lane but the lane i'm on is empty, however this is not the behaviour in my wife's Hyundai... that just keeps going if the lane ahead is clear.. wonder which one is more safer ?

On the lane assist bouncing within the lane, I intend to ask my dealer if that is expected behaviour as some of the skoda videos online doesn't seem to do it. (again my wife's Hyundai keeps a nice line and you can actually feel it automatically correcting the steering wheel on slightly curved road sections which I don't notice that much on the karoq)

My biggest complaint with the Adaptive cruise it it slowing down when cars move to the right hand lane to turn right.

What is the point of the traffic jam assist if you have to press the accelerator to get the car to move off ? how does this differ from ACC ? I can let the ACC bring the car to a halt in traffic and then tap the accelerator to get the car to move off and it just matches the speed of the car in front, how does traffic jam assist differ ?

i think traffic jam assist keeps you in your lane aswell by following the white lines

1/ should only happen of the car ahead is in an outer lane, not in an inner lane. It is designed like that to prevent undertaking which is generally considered bad driving if not illegal (I think it is illegal on motorways). It only does this above a certain speed so that in slow /heavy traffic with all lanes nose to tail it will allow undertaking. The only time it is annoying is on a dual carriageway when a car pulling onto a central reservation slipway and slowing to turn right may cause you car to slow. A quick press of the accelerator overrides.

2/ Lane Assist isn’t designed to allow you to drive hands off, in fact this is specifically disallowed. It is designed to prevent you wandering out of your lane and as such only makes a steering intervention when you get very close to the white lines. Also you really need to be on a road with lane markings both sides for it to work well. And with lane markings that are reasonably visible.

3/ when TJA brings the car to a stop, it will restart if the car in front moves within 2 or 3 secs. The display shows “ACC ready to start”. After that time you have to initiate moving off by pressing the throttle or pulling the ACC stalk back. Obviously it is a safety feature to prevent the car moving off when you weren’t expecting it but I agree I t does seem too-short a time. So far I haven’t found any way to increase the time using VCDS.

4/ Yes it can. Whilst it does switch to navigation when you put in a route, you simply have to press the “back” button (right-most on the steering wheel) and roll to driving data, then press the roll wheel to select.

Video here explains the system in the Superb, don't see why it would be any different in the Karoq.

I still think it's a bit of a gimmick though as apart from the lane assist I can't see what it does extra/differently to the ACC, mine will move off on it's own providing the autohold hasn't engaged, otherwise tap the throttle and away you go.

With the ACC I do find that sometimes if the car in front moves to the left there can be quite a noticeable delay before my car accelerates back to it's original speed and even though I've got this set to 'Sport' in the assist menu of the ACC it's still slow accelerating.

I think TJA is basically just ACC and lane assist, with the slight variation that normally you have to keep your hands on the wheel and make the occasional steering input otherwise LA tells you to regain control of the steering, and if you don’t it complains big-time. With TJA at low speed you can let the car drive hands off the wheel without it complaining.

Wow. Soooo glad I didn't get the Edition.

I have enough to think about when im driving. ;)

Just an observation from a Superb owner. I have the set-up as described by the OP, and Nicknorman has it right, but I would make one additional comment. With regard to point 2, on mine there is an additional lane assist setting "Adaptive Lane Guidance" (ALG). It complements Lane Assist (LA). I believe LA keeps you within the white lines, while ALG keeps you in the centre of the selected lane. If your LA isn't working very well, see if you have the ALG option underneath it in the assist options, and if so, enable it. It works really well in mine (though as said it is an assist system, not a "sleep till you get home" system). If you don't believe me, try ignoring the "Lane Assist - take over steering" command!
