Skoda Superb Handbrake issue

Featured Replies

Hi All,

i have a Superb 1.8 SE trim manual petrol. Its just 3 yr old and done 9000 miles. When I release handbrake and try to move from parking position, it feels as if something is still holding the wheels as I can see the bonnet going up and car moves off with the cranking sound. I have been to the skoda service centre and they checked it and said there is no problem as such and it happens when the car is parked for long but I am worried that it may damage the break mechanism in long run. Has anyone had this problem ?

thanks,

Rohit

So that would be a 2015 model then? Is it a manual handbrake (lever), or an electric one (button/switch)?

Sounds a bit like the brakes sticking on after it has been washed or it has rained, if so then it’s perfectly normal.

@vborovic : its manual and 2015 model

@Gizmo : Thats what skoda mechanic said but is it normal to make a cranking sound and the hold is so strong that car front rises a bit before moving off ?

Mine isn’t as bad as that, how long does it normall stand without being used?

I Use my car only on weekends. But it happened today as well even though it was out on friday. Earlier it used to happen only after being kept idle during weekdays. So there is no set pattern of its occurance.

Do you pull hard on your hand brake when you use it.

@Danny 57 : May be I am not sure. Did you experience the same issue? How do I know how much should I pull ?

The only reason I asked was that some people pull normally and some people pull as if their lives depend on it. My wife struggles to take the hand brake off when I apply it. I am sure yours is "normal".:D I was just trying to think of a reason why it might be reluctant to release.

A lot of handbrakes stick on as described above. Especially after a few days. 2 weeks vacation can really seize brakes on sometimes.

I try NOT to use my handbrake as much as possible to minimise the problem.

Easy to leave in Park or in gear when stopping on level (ish) ground.

My old Octavia that has rear drum brakes has been known to do this after being parked for a while but I've never experienced this on my Superb - er as yet!

You can find that this will make the handbrake fail the MOT test.

Drum brakes do not like working when going backwards.

So always go forward first when you move you car after it has been left for a while.

Thanks @AGFalco . For me it happens when moving forward. I had the MOT last month and I passed.

If you have disk brakes all round then they can stick on when you first move off.

Especially if it has rained and they are/were not dry.

Mine can clunk when it is cold/damp/wet. I always try to dry the brakes off before I park up.

Try leaving the handbrake off ( but the car in gear/wheels chocked ) and see if it still happens.

Thanks AG Falco

Does your car have hill hold assist? If so is happening when on a slope?

It never used to happen until recently. It happens on level ground.
