Engine number and Cam Chain Tensioners

I am looking at purchasing a used Octavia VRs 2010, just over 100k miles, one owner and full history.

 

It's coming with 3 months warranty.

 

I have been reading about the issues with the cam chain tensioners on the EA888 engines. 

 

Can anyone clarify what the EA888 relates to? Is it an engine code or a series of engines? 

 

On the log book the engine number on the car I have been looking at starts with CCZ and the variant further up the log book starts with ACCCZA. 

 

Is this going to be one of the engines at risk of cam chain tensioner fault?

 

Should I be factoring in a cam chain and tensioner service anyway when negotiating a price given the age and miles?

EA888 is the engine reference used by VW, CCZA is what Skoda call the same engine.

 

Personally from experience the cam tensioner fault could be present at any point. Mine is an early facelift the same as the one you're looking at and mine failed.

 

I personally would factor it in and get it done asap for peace of mind.

Was there any warnings before the tensioner went?

 

 

There can sometimes be a rattle heard on startup if the tensioner is on its way out.

 

I've got a 2010 TSI with 50k miles and have just had a new chain, tensioner and guides fitted. Cost me just under £700 fitted but well worth it over the bill for a new engine.

The plan is to get it done whilst I am within the 3 months warranty. 

 

Spoke with Volksmaster in Bury today. Prices were from £650. 

 

Gav_G was that for tensioners, waterpump and new chain? 

I also have a 2010 TSI vRS. The chain slipped on the previous owner when he turned the key to start it. It had covered just under 93k miles and no history of the chains, tensioner or guides ever been updated. It "only" had eight bent inlet valves so escaped pretty lightly. I got my local independent VAG garage to do the repair, costing just over £1.8k. Don't risk it if you aren't sure the latest bits have been fitted!

I didnt have any warning rattle, just felt under powered when driving home and then failed to start again. I was very lucky and only got bent valves but it still cost £1500 to fix. 

 

A preemptive replacement of the tensioner is considerably cheaper.

Hi guys, can someone enlighten me.... I got the same engine with chain, got to my garag3 asking when I need  changin* “cambelt ” , usual question. They had a look and said : you don’t need changing you have chain not  cambelt. What does it mean? Car has 40k miles. They are good honest guys, trust them for long time.

What about the tensioners for chain, are they prone to fail?

It all depends on the year of your engine.

If you have a late 2013 engine, then its almost safe to say you have the latest version of the tensioners fitted.

If you have a 2010/2011 engine then you should get the latest tensioners fitted.

Best to have the conversation with a Skoda guy that knows about these issues.

Thanks I will; so it’s the tensioner which fails not the chain itself. If that happens chain will slip and wreck the engine..

I believe you can t  just change the tensioner as far as I have seen people do change chain also..

If I get it right once you change the possible “ faulty “ tensioner you’re good to go for long time as chain life it’s long is it?

A garage i trusted a lot said the exact same thing! I am going to another for the tensioner change tomorrow!

By tensioner change you mean chain and tensioner change...... which is not cheap

Do I? He's just doing my tensioner for 270 pounds. Unless he thinks the chain needs doing too. Still cheaper than a new engine

For a tensioner? It’s 30 on eBay if I’m not mistaken.. But maybe he charge you this money for labour?? 

Im confused now because I always thought that if you change tensioner it goes together with chain or belt so price will be 6-700. What about water pump, for cars with belts they always do water pump also when doing this
