Needing some Inspiration

Featured Replies

Hi

I have been looking at purchasing an Octavia VRS for a while now, having previouly owned a Fabia VRS LE and a Golf GTI Edition 30, I currently own a 2013 Roomster

However although I like the looks of the VRS (mainly the estate) I cant get over the premium you have to pay and the relatively lowish spec on "most examples compared to say a Superb Elegance. Might sound weird but i'd really like heated seats and these appear to be fairly rare on the VRS but standard on a lot of the Superbs and Yetis available.

Am i correct in saying the standard seats are cloth?

Can someone please offer me some inspiration to help me make my mind up , budget circa 14-15k? Thanks

Budget would be between 14-15k so couldn't stretch to a 280 unfortunately

Shame, they are fun machines. Oh, well, it was worth a thought!

£14-15k should be enough to get you a well optioned vRS. Mine has the full leather which gives heated seats as standard and it has the winter pack, adding the heated front screen. Mine cost me £10,995 in December :)

^ totally agree. I bought a vRS petrol estate with Columbus (posh Nav, wider screen) and Pano roof for under £15k 14 months ago (had 23k miles).

It has 40k miles now but could probably be bought from a dealer for under £13.5k I reckon. Lot of car for the money.

I don’t have heated seats or Canton (upgraded sounds), but you could find one with them. If you want petrol, look every day on as many sites as possible and be prepared to move quickly when you find what you want!

Good luck!

Lovely car :-)

I do look regularly and there are some with the options I want.

I guess what I am trying to say is what benefits do I get getting a VRS over say a highly specced Superb Elegance other than power?

The mileage helped, it had 74k on the clock. It’s hitting 90k now though so I don’t mind it having a big mileage. It’s a 2014 2.0 TDi DSG Estate with full leather, black pack, winter pack, crew protection pack and I’ve fitted the variable boot floor, MIB2 Amundsen stereo with Columbus screen and 19 inch xtremes and various coding tweaks (HBA, TSR etc) I’ve also done black and colour coded badges etc and a few other bits and bobs. What you get from the vRS that a Superb doesn’t get you is a slightly sharper drive. Otherwise the Mk3 Superb is more comfy, more refined, better equipped and bigger. I would say a Mk2 Superb would feel quite old compared to the MQB platform Octy personally.

I really rate mine and other than the heated leather seats (which do come

around every now and then) the spec

is good. You get DAB radio, lane assist, auto xenon lights with AFS, led tail lights, multi function steering wheel and rear parking sensors all as standard, the MY16 onward cars get nav as standard and come with SmartLink for Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink. Some have nice options like the pano roof and power tailgate as well. Lovely.

Here’s mine :)

vRS handles nicely (not driven a Superb 3 yet) and has loads of room. I am 6’01” and can easily sit behind myself with several inches to spare. In fact, it’s huge in the rear and in the boot too.

Mrs Dunc drives it often and the Superb would be too big for her. So, for now, the Oct vRS is fast enough for my needs and big enough for the family’s needs.

Love the DSG too. Awesome ‘box.

The DQ380 is a better box though cos it's got more gears !!!

You don't say diesel or petrol. Same feelings when I was deciding on my car. When I was first thinking on diesel, the vRS didn't even make it on to the shortlist - Golf GTD seemed so much better value as all the little extras were either included or had been specified by 1st owner. I may be wrong in this but even my 'must have's' like flat load bay was an option on most Skodas - only SE-L Octavia seemed to have it as std. Most pics I've seen of Superb estates don;t have flat load bay. Seems a tad weird to me having such a large practical car only then to introduce a hefty load lip.

Hi Scot

i dont really have a preference between diesel and petrol, I cover approx 12k miles a year so either would be ok, trouble is the petrol ones seem rare in comparison to the diesel.

The spec annoys me if im honest, even my wife’s VW up Tsi comes with heated seats as standard, trouble is I like the look of the vrs and it’s whether to sacrifice a car with more options over a car I prefer the look of

Variable boot floor is standard on the Elegance and SE-L and optional on the rest of the range. I’ve fitted it in my car and it’s been very useful. One with heated seats will turn up in the end. Just look for leather and they’ll be heated :) The only Octy that hasn’t heated seats as standard is the L&K.

Similar dilema. If it helps - made the decision to buy a 1.4tsi SE-L that I saw which was loaded with extras at what seemed to be a great price. Spent the next few days wondering if I'd done the right thing and then after taking delivery spent the next week or so looking at it out the livingroom window asking myself - what the hell were you thinking buying that thing when you could be looking at a....  on the drive?

Move on a month or so and I started to come round to liking the idea of buying a car for my needs rather than it's looks. (Even the loook started to grow on me).  Move on several months and started to question what the hell was I doing looking at vRS / GTD's /S-Lines and BMW Sport/M-Sport  -  why hadn't I looked at an SE-L?

Today (6 months after purchase), if I were to be offered a vRS with the same high spec as my car, the truth is I'd turn it down. The diesel vRS is less refined, has no economy advantage, is slower and costs more to insure. A petrol vRS costs way more to run and in all honesty the performance would be wasted on me - the 1.4tsi (150) is plently. I know others are happy 'thrashing' their cars but that's something I can't afford to do, and if the goal is to keep it long-term, not a great idea for longevity.  I agree, there are a few bits of trim that look better on the vRS but that's one hell of a price to pay for self vanity. As for the wheels - well vRS looks better but thats the only advantage - truth is they worsen the ride and noise levels and economy.

My inspirational idea would therefore be to forget the vRS.  :D

Thanks Scot that’s some great advice

i am test driving a VRs and a 1.4tsi today so we will see how it goes

although my mind thinks the 1.4tsi is the most sensible option I keep getting drawn back to the VRs , annoying !

I traded down from a 4.2L V8 car to a 1.4TSi Elegance 2 years ago and haven't regretted it once - yes the performance is lower but it's more than adequate for everyday driving and the fuel economy is excellent. I looked at the vRS too, but couldn't justify the extra cost both purchase price and running cost for a TSi (diesel not justified by my annual mileage).

Tbh I only bought a vRS because mine has a high spec and an automatic gearbox. I originally looked at an Elegance spec one (that happened to have a massive spec but was a manual which I didn’t really want) so I went for my vRS. There’s not a massive difference if the ‘normal’ car is running on 17 inch or smaller wheels IMO. The 18’s get a big jiggly on the torsion bar at the back whereas the independent rear suspension on the vRS is better on the 18’s but I swear the 19 inch Xtreme’s give a better ride than the Gemini’s. I’d have happily had an Elegance/SE-L but I couldn’t find any with the spec I wanted for less money than the vRS I ended up buying. The 1.4 TSi is a good engine as well :)

Sooo, yesterday I took a TDi Vrs (2016) and1.4 Tsi SE (2017)for a test drive

my observations on the VRs was I liked the styling and interior a lot more, the noise from the Diesel engine didn’t bother me and neither did the road noise, wife in the back did say she felt is wa quite bumpy

The TSI felt nice to drive and didn’t feel a million miles 0-60 away from the VRs, I also liked the new touchscreen entertainment system which was huge, I wasn’t keen on the exterior styling though

the Tsi is about 2k cheaper

my head says go for the TSi but my heart I saying VRs all the way, I’ve gone from sporty hatches to boring and practical and I think deep down I miss something that pushing my buttons aesthetically and want to go back

i did also consider a superb with a good spec but again, it didn’t do much for me looks wise

Therefore, I think, I will wait for the right spec VRs to come up and go for one of them

If you end up with an MY16 vRS, you can just change the old 6.5 inch screen to the new 8 inch glossy one. No coding or other hardware is required. The ‘APP’ button won’t work, but you’ll be able to scroll back to SmartLink via the menu as the car would have always been able to do. Expect to pay about £200 for an FL screen :)

What year/reg did the MY16 come in?

May 2015 build, usually beginning on a 65 plate but some 65 plates still have the old stereo. If it is capable of running SmartLink, it’s MY16 :)

If you check the official Skoda used site you’ll find that some cars go on there first before autotrader and there own sites.

I got a vrs230 estate 2016 - full service history,  two months ago  - high miles at 64k for just over £13k - leather electric seats, heated electric front screen, folding mirrors.

If you are considering the 1.4TSI don't forget the SE Sport. In some respects not as well equipped as the SE L but in other respects better, all depends on what is important to you.
