Buying advice please

Featured Replies

Hi

I am in the market for an Superb Estate, was thinking of going for a 170 4x4 unless I'm advised otherwise, any advice regarding what to look for, what to avoid etc welcome.  I'm not looking for a high mileage example preferably 60K ish is about the ceiling

Thanks

Thanks!

Will do, btw I'm assuming diesel is a more economical option than the petrol alternatives

That will depend on your mileage and length of journeys. Normal runs most definitely but short runs, a mile or two will mean limp home mode happening.

Thanks, I probably do 10K a year

What petrol engine is good, trouble free and decent economically yet not dog slow?

My CR170 has been great! If you do buy one, I recommend buying a few interior parts for keeping it a nice place to be.

- Rubber mats all round (including rear tunnel mat and boot)

- rear cargo carrier (mounts to the rear hooks underneath the retractable cargo shelf - it’s great for jackets etc

- rear storage doors to replace the cubby holes on the left and right side of the boot space. By putting in the doors, you keep the stuff in that space contained and it neatens up the boot massively.

When purchasing, a couple of options to look for...

Upgraded sound... A car WITH the upgraded sound will have a small speaker around the door handle area like this... https://goo.gl/images/b3rJuA

If you get an elegance, look for Rear heated seats, they are NOT essential and I believe they were a rare option, but is an added bonus/luxury to have.

If you’re getting the DSG make sure it’s had a DSG service every 40k... there are arguments that say you don’t need to have it maintained every 40k, but it’s best practice. cambelts are 4 years or 120k miles I believe.

these are prone to inside edge wear on the rear due to heavy loads etc... so watch the tyres and have the car setup. I’m told you cannot later the rear camber, not sure if this is true or not

Thanks for the advice, looking around there appears to be more 140s than 170s,  does the 170 give a noticeable difference in driving, I've had the VW 105 and compared to the 130 I had later there was no comparison, the 130 was just so much drivable and pleasant all round.  Is it the same or in reality there's not much in it?

I have the 140 4x4 Tour De France.  Its a great car and I too was looking for a 170 4x4 when originally wanting a Superb, however when my car turned up at the dealers I was impressed enough to buy it.  I think the styling of the TDF model sold it for me more than the performance specs.  I came from a 1.6 petrol Focus so a 2.0 diesel was a whole new experience and I can't say I have noticed a lack of power for the type of driving I do, it can certainly shift when required.

My car has the emissions fix applied (by the dealer before I got it) which I am looking to get rolled back and thereafter may consider a Stage 1 remap which typically gets you to 170 - 180 HP safely.  Some have said that a remap on the 140 gives a great response as the smaller turbo spools up quicker, however if you go for a 170 straight off then that ticks the box if power is your concern, and that can be remapped to 200+.  Being a bit old skool I liked the manual gearbox and simple things like the manual handbrake which is the TDF spec.

LED interior lighting is a great upgrade, cheap and easy to do.  I have the rubber mat set also which makes a big difference in the winter.  Superskoda is a good place to buy from, they have 20% sales every so often.  Whatever your choice I doubt you will be disappointed...!
