ROOMSTER EXHAUST LIFE

Featured Replies

Doing my pre holiday check over of the car, made me wonder how much more life there is in the rear exhaust box.,as the car is 10 years old.

Has anyone replaced their Roomster exhaust yet.

Not on the two Roomsters I have had, but they aren't as old as yours.

I did have a Seat Toledo 1.9TDi, which was on its original exhaust when I sold it at 12 yrs old with 110,000 miles on the clock. Diesels are I think less damaging than petrol engines?

Not a Roomster, but my Octy TDi still has the original centre and back sections at 15.75 years old. The downpipe flexi has been replaced because it "went porous".

Mines 10years old, and the exhaust was still going strong.  There was just a bit of rust round the seams.

My Roomster bought as new in July of 2010. Today after 126.000Km is still fine except some surface rust.

Thank you for the replies. I suppose I should heed the adage “don t trouble till trouble troubles you”

I can just about manage to change a the back box exhaust

I'm so wary of these exhaust, tyre places as they seem to be bonus driven, and I've been caught out before now. Although I have found one locally ,who don,t press you ,and just do what you ask for.

Ten years plus is a bit different from ,when I had my VW beetles over 18 years, and the exhaust seemed to last only 2 years. I think there was about 10 connections which were a bit daunting at first. But you could kneel on a cushion at the back of the car, and you soon developed a method to speed up thing as the years went on.

Exhausts are made of better material than years ago. Mine is a young 5 years old which years ago would be knackered and only has surface rust.

Years ago you would have had two by now.

My Roomster 3 1600 auto has the first signs of blowing at the front end - my local man said there's still life in it yet and doesn't need doing yet - it's only done 68,000 in 10 years

Biggest contribution to exhaust life was ultra low sulphur fuel. Main reason was to reduce acid rain but it also means no sulphuric acid being produced in cold backboxes so they don't rot from the inside any more.

I hadn't thought of that, but you're definitely right.

Had my pretty new to me (owned it for a month) '11 1.2 TSI serviced today, and as expected the exhaust is in pretty bad shape. The car has done 124.000km

Since it seems uncommon at least on this forum with rusty exhausts, it might be down to the road salt here in Sweden.

Anyway, the mechanic was going to give it a shot to weld it, but I haven't heard back from him if it has worked out for him (and me).

My Octavia 1 managed 17 years and 500000kms on the original exhaust, it was still as good as new.

I remember when if you got more than 15000 miles or 18 months out of an exhaust system you were very lucky, there were fast fit exhaust centres on most small trading estates.

People speak these days about "try your local fast fit centre" but I have not clapped eyes on an exhaust one for over 2 decades.

Apparently it was down to some earlier owner replacing parts, and doing a shoddy weld work (Which I guess it's pretty obvious in the photos). Also had to replace both of the CV-boots, but that was all.

I have had an advisory that the flexi section could go, as rusting, but rest of exhaust is fine.

But was told don’t touch it until you hear it blowing, might survive years, but we have to let you know in case it goes sometime.

Roomster  is now in 8th year

My mates 2001 Passat is on the original exhaust. As was explained above the sulphur in the petrol ate through exhaust ssystems
