Turbo actuator Help?

Featured Replies

Hi guys recently replaced my blown kkk turbo with a reconditioned standard unit.

After this I had the usual boost leak problems, blowing the bottom hose off etc  which p****d me off to the point of pulling all the boost pipes and standard intercooler and replacing with hard pipework and a FMIC.

Anyhow after driving the car it still doesn’t feel right although it’s better. The boost doesn’t seem to be the same as it was before I changed the turbo. You can hear the turbo start to spool around the 1800rpm mark but it doesn’t seem to have the same torque as before until it reaches around 2500rpm then it pulls hard to the red line. Also no engine check lights or noticeable smoke on start up or idle.

On hard acceleration in the lower rpm range it smokes (black) quite abit which it did beforehand but maybe slightly worse now (possible poor map from previous owner?)  when cruising along around 70-80mph there’s no smoke and I managed to get around the 50mpg mark on a 50 mile drive to Blackpool after resetting and all seemed well.

Im thinking the turbo actuator might not be set up correctly hense the change in boost and smoking at the lower end of the rpm does this sound plausible?

I have watched videos of how the actuator and stop are set using a vac pump but I’m a bit weary of attempting to adjust it myself as it would just be trial and error until it felt right as I don’t have access to vagcom. Has anybody had any success doing it this way?

If not can anyone point me in the right direction of anywhere or anyone who will be able to check/set up the actuator and possibly remap the car for me correctly? I’m in the Northwest (Manchester) local to awesome gti if that’s something they would be able to do for me? I will pop down as I’m off work in the next couple of weeks.

Just thought I’d ask here first to see any recommendations. Any input, advice or anything else to check first is much appreciated, just want the car running sweet again!

Cheers guys.

you need to get a vcds log done Group 11 engine of a 3rd gear 1500-4100 WOT run. It will produce a curve on a graph showing requested vs actual boost. You need to use the numbers at 4k rpm to gauge actuator calibration. It can be difficult if you are remapped as you don't know what the map is requesting so putting the car back to standard map would be the place to start.

It may be that your actuator is fine but the stop screw needs adjusting, this can be the main cause of lag low down in the revs. Again a vcds test can be performed to check the pressure difference between max and min actuator positioning.

Ive done 2 turbo changes now both needed a fair bit of adjusting to get them correct, you can always find someone to do it for you if you aren't comfortable or dont have the equipment.

I sorted this now posted in another thread. I reset the stop using the VCDS test and adjusting the stop to get the best pressure difference possible. I then found the car was overboosting massively off the scale infact to the point the MAP sensor reached its limit. This meant lthe actuator rod was too short. So I lengthened it until spec and actual boost matched.

The problem was down to my car being mapped which was clear to see once it was logged in group11 and you could see the requested boost figures.

Sorry! I cant seem to update my profile picture as the file sizes are too large unfortunately and I can’t seem to resize them to something small enough using my phone?
