Does this panel gap look ok? Looking at buying a car right now

Featured Replies

Hi all

Appreciate some speedy advice. Just looking at a yeti to buy now. I’ve looked at a couple now but never noticed a panel gap like this between the front pillars and bonnet.

Is is this normal? The bonnet itself is differently aligned to another yeti at the dealership. Nothing major but not quite flush.

Slightly paranoid about buying a shunted and repaired car.  HPI check shows nothing.

This gap is the same both sides. It’s less at the back and more at the front.

cheers!

Looks bad.

HPI check shows nothing if a car is not repaired under the Insurer if someone never made an insurance claim and any Insurance Company Interest.

Cars can be badly crashed and repaired and an Insurer never the wiser.

?

Have you checked the Warranty History and any Zinc Inclusion type repairs, replacement panels etc in the records.

It’s a car with 1607 miles on it at a Ford Dealer Evans Halshaw. It’s 7 months old and was taken as part ex.

Theres another Yeti on site where that panel is nice and aligned and flush.  It thought it looked a bit odd.

Car drives well. Everything else fine.

Should I walk away? They say they’ve had it checked it over and not been in an accident.

Walk away. They'll say whatever to get the sale.

So is this really not normal?

Thanks btw

Hi -  No not normal at all! The gap is far to wide and even the "A" pillar trim does not seal correctly.

In case it helps, I have just been and measured the gap on our Yeti, All the door "Shut" gaps are uniform at 4mm, that one looks significantly more!

The base of the trim on the "A" pillar should seat against the wing and form a seal. That is how they arrive from the factory though I have seen some where the screen has been replaced where the seal is less than perfect.

I think that a bit more "digging" is required to ascertain just why these are as poor as they are before you commit yourself to purchase.......Good Luck!

On a slightly different note. Two years ago, there were some blindingly good PCH (lease) deals on Skoda Yetis. Those two year contracts are all just about, over the next 3 or 4 months, due to come to an end. Talk to some of the dealers and see what is up coming to them in terms of two year old yetis. You may get lucky. I know this as I was one of those that took advantage of the PCH deal, and our Yeti is due back with them at the end of september. As it only has 2600 miles on the clock it will fly from the forecourt when I return it to VW via my dealer. I'm sure there will be a good number of similar cars out there very shortly............. Best of luck.......Tony

Here we go, a video:

The bonnet could be aligned better clearly, but I was concerned at the fit of the front pillar mouldings being clear of the wings.

It's an SE L Drive on at £19, 420. 1607 miles. Registered 28th December 2017, sold Feb 15th and then part exed apparently in May. Few minor scuffs to the interior but those panels I had not seen before.

I just sitting in the dealership drinking coffee pondering whether to walk away so any further advice gratefully received.

I would say Walk Away.

No idea why it is as is.  It needs inspected, seen if Factory Paint or repainted, anything could have happened anytime and anyplace.

Maybe just on a transporter but you have no idea.

If Evans Halshaw want to get a RAC Inspection carried out at their expense then maybe go for that.  Doubt it though.

Find out who had it, ask them, what do they know, where they got it, Skoda / VW, who was / is the Registered Keeper,  who has had it,

was it a Courtesy Car, Hire / Loan car or what / where from whom.

PS

First question now to the Sales Executive or Branch Manager.

Was this car really taken as a trade in?

2nd question,

Are you prepared to put that in writing that Evans Halshaw took this car in as a trade in and the person trading it in bought a car from Evans Halshaw?

They said it was traded by someone buying an S Max so they could get their disabled hoist in it.

I’ll discuss further.

They can show you the V5 then with the Registered Keepers Name, or the Finance Companies or whatever.

Then they can put in writing an Individual Traded it in, and it was not from Motability from BCA (British Car Auctions) or Skoda / VW.

They said they would put it in an email it was taken as a part ex.

They would not pay for an independent inspection.

The good news is I’ve taken all your advice and walked away

The bad news is I’ve walked away! Shame, I wanted to buy the car.

£150 on train fares up to bury and back from London and a day wasted.

I can’t say I’m unhappy about Evans Halshaw not taking my money. I know you’re buying the car and not the salesman but it was the worst customer experience I’ve ever had. I was completely mislead about finance to the tune of £3000, didn’t call back etc etc.

Thanks all.

Anyone know of a black se l drive or L&K DSG diesel 150PS please let me know!

At least another Yeti owner has had a good news story to report on getting a New 1.8TSI engine from a car bought at Evans Halshaw.

I have gone to inspect some cars at EH for members here and others and seen some real horror shows.

I have ripped salepeople to shreads having researched the cars before visiting then when there measuring paint thickness etc.

They are quite good with MOT / Advisories etc and fitting new Discs / Pads etc.  Sometimes..

Well I'm back on the train now so thank you very much to everyone here for the 'Live YETI Sales Advice' ha ha.

If you all think it wasn't a factory spec fit between the panels then it wasn't. Also the other Yeti on the forecourt was as I would expect - the EH people agreed on that but said it would have just come from the factory that way. Maybe so..but if it wasn't quiet right then I'm happy to keep on looking.

Motorpoint Chingford.

66 plate 7,424 miles, Black 2.0 TDI CR 150ps DSG Laurent + Klement £16,599

Was that what you were looking at before?

  • Author

Yes I went to see that one.

Damaged headlining, lip on the front discs, few chips on the passenger side door. Not had an easy life as it was an ex courtesy car.

I've driven a few now and that one drove the worst.

Why do people believe ANYTHING sales people tell them, make up you own mind, sales people have NOTHING to gain by telling the truth it’s just a game to them to tell you what you want to hear ,that’s how they make their money, just keep telling yourself if their lips are moving they are lying and you won’t go far wrong.

I didn’t know what to believe to be honest.

Perhaps some other yetis have a similar fit to those panels and there was nothing wrong with it or perhaps it had been in an accident and repaired.

The whole experience with them was not great. Someone also took a chip out of the paintwork on the rear arch whilst moving the car that morning too which wasn’t a good start..

Interesting/Boring:

I went up to Skoda Lancaster Milton Keynes today to look at a Quartz Grey Yeti to see how I liked the colour - which I do.

Chatting to a very helpful salesman there I mentioned the Evans Halshaw car I didn't buy and he looked up it's history for me which he described as 'strange'. It was only registered at the dealer after 125 miles where upon it went in for a non warranty repair somewhere.

It certainly wasn't a Motobility Car which I had been told it was at one point by Evans Halshaw.  Maybe the non warranty repair explains a bump repaired without being declared on the insurance, which explains the shonky panel alignments.

As advised, it's a good job you walked away from that one!

Good luck with the continuing search.

@Beardtown

Just drawing this thread to your attention.

If you do not know the model well you are looking at take people that do with you or a mechanic that knows cars in general and what to look for.

Sometimes finding the right car takes time.

The BRISKODA For Sale ads are good, or post a Wanted ad maybe.

With that low amount of miles and being 7 months old I would imagine it has been off the road a while and undergone some extensive body repairs by looking at those panel gaps, looks like its had quite a major front end smash

As for Evans Halshaw saying it came from the factory like that, it would never of passed quality control like that
