How are the 10+ year old DSG gearboxes holding out?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I'm on the look out for a new car. There are about 5 or so models on my wanted list, and a mk2 petrol Octavia vRS is one of the stronger candidates!

I've ALWAYS been a manual guy. But I think I might well give a DSG box a go this time around.

From what I can see, the 6 speed wet clutch DSGs fitted to this model are pretty good reliability wise, though a lot of what I'm reading is several years out of date so I'm not sure that applies to today?

I thought you guys would be the perfect people to ask how they are performing after this time? Do they still feel good? Have there been an increase in failure rates rates as times gone on, or a they still pretty solid?

My current thinking is 95% chance I'll be fine for the 3 or 4 years I plan to keep the car, 5% I'll end up with a huge bill. Sound about right?

That's with fluid changes every 40k, without that, your asking for trouble.

I know its not exactly the most impartial of places to ask, but this forum seams much less fanboyish than most lol.

My experience is somewhat limited, but I've owned a 59 plate 6 speed dsg for 9 months now.

I've only ever owned manual cars before this and I'm a convert! Lovely and smooth, good economy and simple to drive. No problems with it so far, I changed the oil and filter a few months after I bought it.

I've had mine since 2007,  '56 plate ,bought it from the 'stealers' at 3,500 miles, it's now nearing 98,000, admittedly it's not a huge milage over 10 yrs,but have done some long road trips towing a heavy sailing boat.

It's the 6 SPD DSG, with 1.9 pd engine, and has not missed a beat, have just come back from Northern Ireland without any problems.

This gearbox , without doubt is the best auto I have driven, added bonus is you can change gears manually by flipping the lever over, for a more involved drive.

As long as you change gear oil on schedule , there should be no problems.

I had a 2006 2.0 TDI DSG.

It had been in my family from new and when I sold it just over a year ago, it was 11 years old/114,000 miles and the DSG hadn't given any trouble at all.

However it did have a new DMF around 90,000 miles. I don't think DMF failure is much of an issue on the 2.0 TSI versions.

There are examples of the 6 speed DSG doing galactic miles easily......there was a forum member who had a 2.0 TDI DSG with 350,000 miles on it with no issues.

I've got a 57 plate 2.0 TDI PD L&K with DSG now on 110K

Got it with no history (brave) so changed all the fluids inc. DSG

Had it just over 6 months and 7K miles on it's not missed a beat.
