Water Collecting Under the Car

Featured Replies

I've had a quick search & google but couldn't find anything specific about this.

My car was serviced yesterday by a friend of mine who commented that when he jacked it up to do the oil change, a lot of water poured out of an under car tray which was pretty much under the passenger foot well.

He was confident that it wasn't anything from the engine and that it was just water.

Now it hasn't rained here properly for a couple of months so the only time there would be any water of note would be when I wash it, I think the last time I washed it was around 10 days ago.

Given where it seems to have collected, would it be some kind of drainage channel from the scuttle plate that might be blocked?

TIA :)

Could be the air con drain, quite normal.  After using the air con in my 230 when I park up theres a pool of water under the car, passenger side

Had something similar to this a few weeks back (dry weather back then too) - on way back from a hen-do camping party, S/O reported having to drive over an enormous speedbump which ground-out the car... causing me to go inspect the underneath when I got it back.

Having jacked it up, there was a small but noticeable amount of water that trickled from the skid-plate behind the lower sub-frame (lower engine mount area), initially causing a heightened heart-rate...

Did all the normal fluid inspections with much more focus, and reached the same conclusion as the gentleman below:

Kept checking regularly afterwards. Haven't seen again since, but then again I run with the windows down rather than the AC :)

I did ask him if it could be condensation from the aircon but he didn't think it would be as the condenser is on the other side.

Having said that, I've never seen the tell-tale puddle of water I used to get from my Focus so did wonder where that water was going.

I'll have a snoop around over then next couple of days to see if I can see exactly what's going on :)

Next time you finish a journey and you have had the aircon on (for say 20 mins), pop the bonnet and look at the aircon compresser pipe (comes from front left of engine, up to divers headlight and then around towards back of engine.  The pipe freezes  as it pumps the air, but the heat of the engine causes it to defrost.  I checked mine a few days ago and there was literally water pouring off this pipe.

As you corner or park at an angle the water will shift in the undertray.

I had that on a Mini I used to own, it was the air-con.

The water that dripped off was too clean to have been through the engine.

If your mechanic can't figure out why there was water under your car in the middle of a heat wave with no rain I wouldn't be letting him service your car anymore.

Its the evaporator that moisture condenses on, not the condenser, which is inside the car, this then goes via a drain hose the the underside and makes its way to the floor where it appears to have half the Briskoda forum puzzled as if air conditioning had only just been invented

Isn't the condenser at the front of the radiator? Where it can be easily damaged by rogue pheasants?

I remember the thrill of my first air conditioned VW and the panic at the water running across the driveway.B)

yes, aircon can create this if it has been in use and it is usually on the passengers side (my girlfriend gets it regular on her 64 plate KA ) but back to more serious notes i have had this too on my mk3 octavia estate, it seems when it rains a lot and i get in the car and open my drivers door i get a bit of water that spills onto the floor?? any ideas guys? almost like its being collected inbetween the lower door and the lower sill but only drops once i open the door? pretty positive its just rain water collecting but why/how?

I get that too with the rain or after I've washed the car, seems pretty common.  I believe there is a fix if the water makes it into the car itself, pretty sure I've seen posts on here about it.
