Cheap In Tank Fuel Pump Repair TDi (Australia), roadside fix that might be permanent (read bodge)

Featured Replies

Hi all ,

I had another in tank fuel pump failure which left me stranded.

As it happened i had a new Holden Commodore in tank fuel pump in the cars boot (for petrol), i assumed it would be much higher pressure than the diesel one , but thought what the heck i need to get the car moving and home.

This pump kit i used https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intank-Electric-Fuel-pump-Fits-Holden-Commodore-Statesman-VG-VN-VP-VR-VS-6443255/132370318155

i pulled the old pump out of the car ripped out the expired pump, cut a hole in the base of the old pump housing (had some tools in car :) ) drilled 4 holes in wall of housing to cable tie Commodore fuel pump too along with its supplied "sock' style filter, fitted new clear fuel hose to it which was also in car as was chasing weird air traps in my fuel line (going up hill it seems :( either the fuel pump grabs air somehow or the fuel pump is being turned off ! somehow  )  , crimped on some new electrical fittings and cable tied them well away from each other and dropped it into the tank.

I half expected fuel to spray from every hose fitting in the engine bay , but all was good , the car started and got me home on a $24.76 bodge (which i'm still having to drive around on and no leaks from any hoses) .

My concern is how safe is it, have ordered a new in tank pump out of Europe , but will be a 2 week wait or so for the mailman . I'd like to think it will be safe as its designed for petrol anyway and mine is diesel.

I wish i had some photos of the handy work , sorry

Thank you :)

G'day mate.

No worries, any fix that gets you home is a goodun.

Surely there are more local options for a fuel pump, if you have the part number just cross reference it and I'm sure you'll find any number of VAG models which share it and can be found in a local scrappy.

Re weird air traps...

It's probably because you're upside down, you do realise that a euro spec pump will be calibrated the wrong way up for use down under!

the VAG pumps by themselves (not the whole thing) are few and far between in Australia , Diesel is still not a big deal here , though i did just buy a sample out of china to check out
