Sorned vehicles?

Featured Replies

For the purpose of buying and driving a car back home can you see any problems with this method?

Car is sorned,  I tax it and drive it back home, before the end of the month I then re sorn it and claim any unused tax back. Assume I tax the car on the 1st August for 6 months, in theory if I did the above I should get 5 months refunded?   I'm sorning the car again from say 1st Sept as it won't be on the road again for some time.

The main question is will I be able to un-sorn and re sorn a vehicle in the same month? BTW the vehicle in question does have a current MOT and I realise I need insurance too.

I Sorned one yesterday before the monthly DD comes out on the 1st of the Month.  I also cancelled my DD online with the bank.

If a was to set up a new DD on the 1st August  online it would not be 12 months VED i did, it would be £13.12 i pay.

I suppose i could cancel the DD again.

You got it right. Remember to Sorn online before the end of the month to ensure you get the following months refund.

I had problems with SORN when I had a DD monthly due on the 1st. I sorned the 1st day of the month and cancelled the DD a few days laterafter they had taken that months DD. DVLA started threatening emails and letters about car not being taxed. No sense from the call centre script readers. LH not talking to the RH.

Why did I SORN on the 1st?

Because Skoda dealers couldn't organise a **** up in a brewery. Yes you can fetch your scrappage in on the last day of the month, wait no you can't, wait....

^^^ Yes I think I've read a post about that before, sorn a vehicle on the 1st of the month you won't get that months VED refunded, so needs doing on the last day of the previous month.

I think I've got this one sussed now for my particular needs. Tax for 6 months, sorn vehicle before the end of the 1st months tax come to an end, get 5 months refunded.

Someone on another forum said pay by monthly DD then cancel the DD after the 1st months payment. I think that way I would be paying more pm for the DD system.

Anways I can't go see the car until later next week, I'm hoping it's a good one.

Is there no chance of just getting it trailered, or do you know someone with Trade Plates?

Paying by Direct Debit isn't paying for a months tax though, it's only paying monthly for the period you choose to tax the vehicle for. So if you choose to tax it for 6 months and pay DD for it, then cancel the DD, you're still going to be responsible for paying the remainder of the 6 months which DVLA will come looking for and take a very dim view of.

^^^ Not surely if you sorn your vehicle before the 2nd payment is due to go out?

As below....

VED.jpg

If you SORN the vehicle then DVLA will know you've taken the vehicle off the road and will adjust your (and the vehicles) status accordingly, irrespective of how you paid for the tax. If you simply cancel the direct debit (as was implied in your earlier post) without informing DVLA of SORNing the vehicle then you haven't done anything other than refused to pay the tax you applied for.

Subtle wording difference, big real life difference.

^^^ Yes I see what you mean, let them do the cancelling of DD when you sorn,   do it like suggested  as you say leads to problems.
