19 inch rims on a mk1?

Featured Replies

looking at 19's and after peoples opinions if too big physically or just look like a hot wheels toy when fitted?

19's will go on because they fit mk4 Golf and Leons but ultimately I think they look too big.

18's fill the arches just right and tyres are cheaper

I have 18s on my estate and they look just right, although I must sort out the arch gap! :D Whenever I see a Golf or Leon with 19s on (have yet to see an Octavia with them) I do think they look a bit big. The Leon Cupra R doesn't look as bad with the larger size but I'd always opt for the 18s regardless of the model. :)

18'S IT IS THEN

Given how much harder the 18's on my insignia feel on the road compared to the 17's on my brother in law's otherwise identical insignia... i sure as ****e wouldnt go to a 19inch unless there was space for a fat tyre too..

Dont some of the "special" edition insignias have 20's?

If there is such a thing

I dunno, but id say they would be like driving around on wooden cart wheels, with rubber spray painted on!

Crikey, I went from a 16 inch to 15 inch, to make the ride less bouncy over poor sufaces, and it works

I was talking to someone a few weeks back about the wheels on my mk1.  I was complaining that the factory wheels on my particular model should have been 16" alloys but it had come to me on 15" steelies.  His reply was to tell me that he had deliberately gone from 16s to 15 on his own mk1 because he felt that it rode better.

I have been content with my 15s ever since.

Both my previous Mk IV Golf TDI estate and the Octy had/have 16" wheels wearing 205/55/16 tyres, and the ride is noticeably harder/less comfortable than my wife's MkIV 2l Golf "GTI" (well, that's the badge on it!) with 15" wheels and 195/65/15 tyres - I would change the Octy to 15" alloys if it weren't for the cost and hassle of 4 new sets of wheels and tyres!

Lol oh dear, the one VW should never of badged as a GTI you mean.

VRS have to have 16" for the front brakes

To be honest I dont think you'll find any differences in comfort between a 15 or a 16 rim in the same way when I switched my Leon from 17" to 18" I couldn't tell the difference but as soon as your sidewall size is 45 or less then you'll feel the difference

Re the "GTI", "that's the one" = std 2l Mk IV, but with a shorter ratio box => accerates slightly quicker, and then noisily runs out of steam at around 80-85!

As for the wheels on the Octy, just remembered that because I fitted 312mm front disks (and very good they are too!) in place of the 288mm ones, I would not be able to go down to 15" rims
