How bad are budget tyres?

Featured Replies

The PS4 performs head and shoulders above the landsail. The car is completely different to when it had cheap tyres.

Much more confident, quiet and surefooted

  • Tyre snobbery is even funnier than manufacturer snobbery with cars.  More nobbery than anything else. Do not buy sh!te tyres, but do not believe that those that advertise more, sponsor motor

  • In September 2000, I took ownership of a brand new 1.8 Focus Estate, certainly not the quickest car in the World but at the time, only the 2nd car I'd owned and certainly quicker & better better h

  • Same tread pattern doesn't mean it's the same carcass, or rubber, though.

Just thought I'd add a recent vid from tyre reviews to highlight how bad tyres can be.

TLDR: don't mix and match tyre types.  Fit performance tyres at each end or mid range at each end.

Granted, but they do mention Michelin as being equal and the conclusion is valid.

High powered RWD posers car hardly relevant to a FWD car, never mind a Fabia mk 1 HTP.

It's common sense really. Mismatch in grip levels are not good. Modern electronic safety systems helps to mitigate somewhat but still not good practice

My excellent £100 each fitted Winter tyres which i ran all year are off my Motability car ready for it to get handed back and the shoite Continental Premium Contact 2 Contiseal which are £130 each are back on.

Flashing ASR light at the slightest sign of damp on the road which is why they came off after i got the car.

It was more than damp last week and i really wished i had waited to change the tyres right up to it going to the dealership.

VW Group do have some really crap tyres from the major brands that are the OEM fitment.

Continental Premium contact 2 ?

how old is this car, I think they are upto 6

However I do agree about poor choices from VW group, my Seat came with Pirelli P7s which are poor in the wet when cold, have spun wheels pulling out of side turnings at 13c and below.  Not really suitable for UK except in high summer.

Do you mean you think Premium Contact go up to the number 6?

Higher Numbers do not automatically mean better tyres or newer tyres....

It is a November 2016 Alhambra and it has got a pair of the New Contact 2's on the front (scrubbed in) the pair that was not on that long were worn badly on the outside edges.

Original pair back on the rear.

This is the kind of crap SEAT fit.

PS

Waiting to order an e-Citigo iV or Seat e-Mii.

No doubt they will have totally inappropriate tyres to increase the range but be hopeless even in a town or city on cobbles, tar, or concrete if anything other than dry or you just tickle the accelerator. As to winter, that will be fun to find out.

When I cast my memory back, all the 5 Skoda's we had came with various tyres that were universally excessively loud. Perhaps they get European compound tyres, formulated for EU countries?. Most European countries have very hot summers and change over to winter tyres as required by law there. Just a guess.

The P7s on my Superb III are phenomenaly loud, have poor traction despite only 150ps 250nm and 235/45/18. The fabias we run are actually quieter cars on Vredstein Quatracs.
