Petrol choice

Featured Replies

Hi

i own a Skoda. Octavia Hatchback 2.0 TSI vRS 230 5 door.

Does it matter what grade of unleaded fuel I use.

Thanks

Welcome.

Only to you really, you know how and where you drive.   The car has to be able to run on 95 ron unleaded.

Try 97 & 99 Ron and see if you feel any benefit as you use the car.

Tesco Momentum 99 will cost you about £2.50 a tank extra and maybe you will feel the more efficient running car.

Shell v power all the way. I can certainly feel the difference with it on my bike (bmw s1000xr) if I put that in compared to normal grade petrol.

You should be able to feel the difference in throttle response (and should get a smidgen more power) if you go for a blast.

But rule of thumb, the higher the Ron, the better.

My 220 ran okay on 95, but it much prefers Momentum 99.  The difference only really manifests itself with spirited driving, in my opinion.  I tried one tank of 95 in a total of 73 tankfuls so far (72 of them Momentum), and probably won't do it again.

Gaz

My 220 runs fine on 95, with occasional tanks of 99 if going on a long journey - It seems to improve the fuel consumption and the engine feels more responsive.

I put a couple of tanks of Shell ( V-Power or 95) through every few months to let the detergents clean the pipes.

In short no. I never noticed a difference between 95 and 99, whether from a Supermarket or the likes of Shell etc. in terms of smoothness, power and fuel economy.

Mine is run almost exclusively on Tesco standard unleaded and occasionally gets a treat of Shell V Power (for the alleged additive benefits) every couple of months.

In Serbia I exclusively put 100 G-Drive, but to be honest, we went all the way to the coast of Spain last summer and put most of the time 95, 98, maybe 100 once, as it is very rare, couldn't tell the difference.

The difference will only be felt when driving enthusiastically, if pottering 95 ron is fine, you will notice it more if you are using 95 ron on a hot day as the car will pull the timing advance (less power) to stop pre-detenation or pinking or knocking as that is very bad for the engine.

Personally that way I think about it is - I bought a mildly performance car so always use either V-Power or Tesco 99 Momentum.

As long as it is at least 95 the car will run OK on it, 98 or 99 and it will be more that OK

I notice a difference in the Wifes petrol Cooper S, it drives far better on V Power and is noticeable - realistically its nearly 10p a litre more though so its run on normal Shell.

I ran my Diesel on V power and didnt notice a thing, so again its run on normal Shell diesel.

However on my old Oct diesel whenever I changed to a different branded certain supermarket fuel in the car it started to run strangely -- seemed dull and hesitatnt.  I ran a few tanks of Shell and it went.  Changed back to supermarket and it started to run strangely again so Ive avoided supermarket fuel since then and run shell

I've now don 20k in this Oct (under my ownership) and its never had anything other than shell
