im pretty against the view of restricting a young driver.... me being 19 atm and about to buy a tvr im gonna bias..... like many people have said its depends very much on what mind set people have...my 30 year old bruv drives tbh like a loon and reckons i hold up sunday traffic so it very much depends on the individual...restricing young thugs to a 1.0 isnt gonna stop them from stealing sum blokes/ladies more powerful car and tearing around the streets is it. unfortunately you slightly older gents are stereotyping and brandishing the young..i mean honestly if all these ideas came into practise why should a good/safe young driver have to put up with it..without a doubt though yes there are alot of young tw*ts out there but to be honest all my near crashes and the 1 crash ive had have been with 40+ people and the women who managed to lose control of her car on a straight and backended me was 45ish..so to be honest im against the view of just young people getting restricted...i would much rather see people who have caused an crash via dangerous driving or being under the influence, got 6 points or with a criminal conviction get these restriction as they are the "unsafe" ie look at the individual and if they have a chance of being a wreckless driver then restrict them.

my 2 hong kong dollars worth

-ho:)

I think you've just confirmed much of it (a TVR at 19!?!).

I'm not sure about the 'brandishing' bit though! :)

im glad too see these difering opinions, to take it a step further HOW do we stop uninsured/mot'd drivers from using the road????? i ink an insurance sticker in the rear window(and mot) so if by chance there is a road traffic fed on the road he can check easily......but thats in a dream world, other than that i dont know what we gonna do i know a few people hit by uninsured drivers and getting their car repaired or justice is a nightmare. in the nw it is a reg occurence i dont know about other areas

i never said they were allowed to have higher than 1.1 did i?

they should only be allowed 0- 1.2litres. don't have to de restrict

I was agreeing with you Chris, just take a wee step away from being so defensive and you might see that

In Ireland you put an insurance 'disc' in your window next to your tax

I think it's TXT-SPK

Not about the vehicle, it's about the driver. Make the standard of driving higher - make the test harder.

i drive and talk defensively!! generally safer:thumbup:

sorry i didn't see that you agreed.:)

Make the standard of driving higher - make the test harder.

And retest the people already on the road periodically! Might also need better policing of people driving without licences (and insurance!) too....

Chris

Absolutely.

Having recently done my IAM it's astonishing how your driving deteriorates over the years after passing the L test - I think retests every 5 years minimum and bhp restrictions on young drivers - I drove like a **** when I was a kid, thankfully I had a cr@p car to limit my idiocy & never had significant problems.

Regardless of intent, there is absolutely no substitute for experience - I do over 40K a year and am IAM and still make mistakes, at 17/18 you make mistakes daily, perhaps without knowing it - at least if you make them slowly you're less likely to kill someone.

but to be honest all my near crashes and the 1 crash ive had have been with 40+ people

I'm not wanting to cause offence here, but to be honest I'd be a bit worried about someone so young and inexperienced driving a TVR, particularly when they've had so many 'near crashes'.

Have you ever driven a rear wheel drive car before?

I don't think it should be allowed to be honest. from driving a learner motor to a TVR what a joke.

hopefully that person do't find out the hard way...but maybe the only way to get sense out of them.

Agree with the second sentiment but i[ll be damned if i'm going to sit the current test........tried the cd test that my sister got with her lessons.......apparently i failed to slow down for the cyclist on the left...the same cyclist that, given the distances involved would have had to have Pratt & Whitney's fitted to even be near me at the junction.........

Seems to be a case of "drive as slowly and as passively as possible, just let everyone past/out of junctions...." which in all brutal honesty, doesn't work in the real world - i'd never get to work with that attitude.

hahahha you lot assume that the near misses ive had have been my fault.. i openly admit im not the best driver in the world but ALL of my near misses have been caused by sum1 else. yes ive driven a RWD car b4 and tbh if you dont drive around like a lunatic it doesn't feel all that different. in response to chris newell..i really dont think a fabia vrs as a daily runner can be classed as a "learners car"neither a toyota camry 2.4 be classed as a learner car. did any of you older gents think about how many miles in the past 3 years of driving ive clocked up?what sort conditions ive been driving in? did any of you think to ask if ive done pass plus or iam or even a skid course?(done all 3 by the way)so to be honest like i said b4 look at every1 as an individual.im probably more qualified than most people on the public roads.dont just think cos im young im inexperienced.how many claims/ points on the liscence have you older gents had/made?

sum1 said in an early post on how to control non insured/mot'd cars on the roads. surely the dvla and all the insurance companies could share there info theyve got on the computers and for say when a car gets seen by the traffic master cameras (license plate readers) then a police/highway patrol officer could be informed or even cctv cameras could have a built in plate reader and do the following job?

Never had an accident, seen hundreds eh? :D

Why bother restricting them? They are just diluting the gene pool. They want to kill themselves? Fine. I just feel sorry for those they take out.

We protect people too much these days eg playing conkers banned in school as its dangerous

How are people expected to learn rights and wrongs if there is/are no penalty/consequences for being wrong?

Most drive their cars like a playstation game. I have driven and crashed, not been badly hurt yet. Before you ask, my crashes were in powerful cars, I was young :( I was also taking part in competitive motorsport at the time :D

That could be part of the problem - driving in the real world is not like driving a PS2! My 15 year old might get round the Ring almost as fast as me on his Playstation, but he crashes and I don't! In real life if you crash, you're foogazzied :D :D

Well mate, I do over 50k a year and dont have any 'near misses' as you put it, your obviously doing something wrong if you constantly find yourself in these situations, even if you do think it's always the other persons fault - thats is the nievety and immortalness of youth! (i'm not that old BTW, I'm only 29 so dont consider myself an 'older gent' just yet!!)

A rear wheel drive car will behave very differently to a front wheel drive car in almost any weather conditions other than perfect sunshine, even then if your pressing on it will behave in a vastly different manner - and in particular a high powered RWD like a TVR will be a totaly different driving experience to anything else you've ever driven I can assure you of that.

A fabia VRs actually IS a driving school car as some of the instructors on here will be happy to confirm!! and having owned a 2.4 camry in the past while it's a nice enough car, it's not exactly gonna set the world on fire!

All the pass plus courses/ IAM etc etc in world cant gaurantee you'll be a good or safe driver, while they are obviously a good thing, and you are to be commended for taking so many of them, when the test is over and your back out on your own in the real world, 3 years experience simply is not enough IMO.

Oh and I've never had a claim, nor got any points on me licence, and believe me, I'm niether the most sensible, nor the slowest (by a big margin) driver on the road.

I agree with limiting Engine size and power output, much like Learners can only ride bikes with a upto 125cc with 12bhp limit or over 21 upto 600cc and 33bhp (i Think) Say upto 1.2L with 50Bhp for 2 years and have to carry green "L" plates or "P" plates etc!

The other thing is as many people have pointed out extended driving tests and regular retests!

I'm not preaching as I've been a **** in my yoof, had a MK2 Golf GTI as my first proper car at 19 and drove that Like I stole it! Had 10 points by the time I was 21!!!!!!

There are some good ideas coming through, unfortunatley I bet none of them will ever see the light of day :(

Steve

Bananaman,

I've seen a few Fabia vRS driving school cars.

As others have pointed out, 'near-misses' seem to happen to some people more than to others. Strange, isn't it?

The vast majority of people think they're above average drivers.

ps. Using a bit of grammar and putting punctuation in the correct places will make your posts easier to read and may make you sound more articulate ;)

Say upto 1.2L with 50Bhp for 2 years and have to carry green "L" plates or "P" plates etc.

The only problem I can see with an idea like that is it assumes that everyone learns to drive when they're 17. Supposing you're 30-something and decide to learn to drive, yet will probably be fairly mature behind the wheel - yet you'd still be limited to a 1.2L with 50bhp...

Rob.

Fair Point, still doesn't make you any less of an inexperienced driver though! Could do as with bikes and have a direct access route! ie you have to learn to drive in a restricted car, but upon pssing a longer more in depth test you qualify for an "Un-restricted" license and can drive any car you wish, spose the only limit would be how much insurance you can afford!

But say have you accrue more than 6-points in the 1st 2 years you automatically have to take your test again and are limited to the restricted cars for 2 more years! That way it wou;d stop the rich types going out, buying M3's or summat and driving like numpty's!

well the rwd car ive driven plenty of times is a mazda mx5 1.8. though not as powerful as a tvr i still understand the philosophy of rwd cars.this was the main reason as to why i took a skid course.

The reasons as to why im buying a tvr isnt solely down to the performance of it.i love the look of a chim always have done. nothing beats the sound of a tvr and i cant think of another model of any marque id be more proud to own. the performance is just an added bonus in my eyes. really if i wanted to drive around like a tw*t i could quite easily do it in the fabia vrs. i dont and probably never will do. dont just assume theres gonna be tyre smoke everywhere.

if i was to make a mistake in the tvr it probably best to do so now than for say when i have kids, a mortage and a wife. i dont plan to but accidents happen.

when i refer to my near misses its literally been like 4 in the last 3 years.i can whole heartedly say none of them have been my fault.

mc bodge i am above the average driver. i have the qualifactions to prove it

johnjonhealy....trust me i would hold my hand up when ive done something wrong.ive done it in the past and went to court for it.

back to the do i agree or disagree.. theres a fundamental problem with implementing a 1.0 engine ban on cars. considering the average 17 year olds state of mind. theres going to be alot of unhappy people especially amongst the rich. who would kick up a fuss about it being un-fair. "like it or lump it" view unfortunately would not work.

Have to agree with you on that one, as far as truly attainable cars go anyway.

Ultimately my fave car at the mo is the Lambo Gallardo, one day i will own the best car of all time though - a Ferrari F355!

dont just assume theres gonna be tyre smoke everywhere.

There would be if I were driving it :o
