Clonk from front

Featured Replies

I have a "clonk" coming from the front of my fabia when driving over bumps - its not a big sound - nothing like when the ARB was worn out (new ARB one month ago) - but still... :o

Should I be worried and get the dealer to look at it again, or is it just the way it is suposed to be?

Could it be a result from the cold here in Norway? Like joints and brushes stiffening up or something?

In my 3 week old fabia has the same problem.. its going to service tomorrow and they are going to have a look at it. Sometimes it sounds like someone hits a hammer somewhere in the left front of the car

edit: the "clonk" doesn`t come everytime when going over a speedbump etc. in this 3 weeks time i have heard it about 10 times. And its also cold here in finland.. this clonk could have something to do with weather because this weeks has been warmer and i havent had any clonks.. but lets see what the servicemen have to say about it.

Does it do it on full lock too? Could be CV joints perhaps - mine are knackered too :(

I've had this on mine too, doesn't happen very often and I go over loads of speed bumps :(. Be interested to know if anyones had it fixed - could it be ARB bushes worn out?

Maybe the ARB drop links.

same problem here..... still happens! they have checked everything, but still does it! I even went to an independant mechanic who couldnt find out what problem was.

The changed the clips on my rear seats, but personally i think its the parcel shelf knocking. But.... it definately sounds like noise was coming from front n/s..... but it aint! (i know what i mean)

Dont think the ARB-brushes are the problem for me, as they are (previousley mentioned) little over one month old... Els the dealer didnt do the job he billed me for..

I've had it as well....t'is a curious thing.

Hi, I've just cured mine!

In my case it was the left hand side anti-roll bar bracket that was'nt tightened up properly. It had been driving me mad and my local Skoda garage could'nt find it!

Just jack the car up, remove the front wheel and look for the anti-roll bar. You will see 2 bolts clamping the bush/bracket to the chasis rail. Just fully tighten the 2 bolts (a bit tricky for access) and away you go.

Mine rides like a Rolls-Royce now over the bumps. :o

Hi,

Just like many of you guys in here I also have the same "clonk" coming from the front, occasionally. Also I life in Finland (like jjj84) and it's cold in here and all of that.. but I don't think it's got anything to do with the cold.

I've heard the similar clonk from several other cars as well, including my previous Nissan Almera, wife's current Nissan Almera, parents Saab 9-3 sports sedan etc etc.. One possibility would be the front shocks as it comes after speed bumps etc. Suppose they're a bit stuck in something and then just "bump" to their natural position.. Could make that kind of sound?

I dunno.. don't worry about it too much, since these cars combined they've got at least 120k behind and none of them's gone sour.

Still, if jjj84 or any of you other guys find a real solution - I'd be glad to hear about it as it's kind annoying.

suspension brushs maybe?

What do you sweep with them??

My fabia was at the service yesterday but they didn`t find anything wrong with the car... They suggested that it would be the springs that make that sound, nothing to worry about that..

Next week my car is going to get koni sportkit springs and dampers so will see if the clonking appears again.. hopefully not.

Hi

been back to the dealer today. They testdrived my furby and after closer inspection found they had used wrong brushes when fixing my ARB a month back. They have used brushes made for 19mm bar and my ARB is 17mm... no wonder I had a 'clonck':P

Back in wednesday to change into the right ones....

jippijohoo!!!

The cars like brand new!! This is the way it is suposed to be!:D

Last friday i got my new koni dampers and springs.. And no more clonks for me  Handling and the ride height is much better now, would recommend this upgrade for everyone.

The clonks that my car had were probably caused by the springs

Found this picture..

I understood that this was the dealers solution to this guys clonks..

I have a fabia vRS with 4500miles on the clock and it has made this clonk noise intermittantly ever since the car had done about 200 miles. The clonks come from the front of the car and only happens on mildly rutted roads.

The frequency of its occurance is increasing as the weather progressively gets colder so I 'm wondering if it could be due to the oil in the shock absorbers becoming more viscous with the cooler temperatures. Is it related to "Shocker - knock?"

I'm waiting until mid winter before I take my car in for investigation because hpefully by then the knock will be quite pronounced and very repeatable.

I have had a similar problem with my Vrs almost from new. Looking through the forum I had decided it must be the anti-roll bar or drop links due to the large number of entries on these topics.

however...

I also spotted a single entry mentioning a Skoda bulletin issued to dealers about the nearside gearbox mount giving similar noises. I duly booked my car into my local dealer and hey presto, it now drives like a Rolls-Royce. I can't believe what a difference it has made (I know it's daft but it also feels quicker!).

I had mine seen to by the Skoda garage who plastered silicone grease all over the gearbox / console mounting assembly. This, apparently is Skoda's official fix for the "clonk"

Within a couple of days after the fix I noticed the clonk had returned. Needless to say, I'm not at all impressed with Skoda's technical fixes. I had very little faith in its effectiveness from the outset..... how could a noise resulting from two bodies impacting against eachother be cured by a liberal covering of grease???

Seems that Skoda themselves aren't aversed to employing pikey principles in an attempt to dismiss the necessity for a properly engineered solution to what seems to be a design fault.

Yep I have exactly the same problem with my VRS. I've had the silicone greese "fix" but the problem returned within a couple of hundred miles. I'll get it looked at again when the next service is due in a couple of thousand miles.
