EA8888 timing chain check with VCDS

Featured Replies

There've been horror stories about timing chain issues on the EA8888 (petrol vRS) engine so I thought I'd fire up VCDS and take a quick look - I don't think mine is affected (2014 manufacturing date) but better safe than sorry etc.

There's information on how to do this which says to check measuring block 93, but the measuring block button is greyed out. The Ross-Tech forums say in that case you need to use the advanced measuring blocks functionality but I don't seem to be able to find anything corresponding to block 93 in there.

I *think* the corresponding value is "IDE00182 Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position" which on my engine is -0.7deg which is well below the 4-5deg where you need to do something about it but I'm not 100% sure. I've attached a screenshot of all the camshaft-related values that looked relevant, can some kind soul confirm if I'm looking at the right value?

Thanks bigly :-)

I’d be interested to know to. I’ve subscribed!

Can't help with the values, but the horror stories are on the EA888 Gen 2 as fitted to the MK2 facelift.

I have not seen any instances of this happening to a Gen 3 as fitted to the MK3 Octavia from 2013 onwards. That's not to say it couldn't happen, but VW fixed the issue with the tensioner design in this generation I believe.

Thanks, that is what I assumed was the case but it was difficult/impossible to find exactly which engine revisions had the fix.

Hi Guys,

Is the angle range the same also for VRS TDI ?

After the change i have Camshaft intake bank 1 phase position -1.65 and the car is not so punchy.

No the values would be different for TDi as the camshafts are fixed and not veriable, plus the TDi is belt driven and not chain so no tensionner issues. TDI does have a tensionner but it's not reliant in the oil pressure as its sprung loaded.
