Handling goes awry when my car is unladen/low on fuel

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. As some of you may know, I have an 07 reg 1.9 PD fabia Estate. It has Bilstein B4 shocks on it, Eibach pro-kit springs (35mm drop), H&R spacers and a new set of (refurbished) MK4 Bora Sport wheels with Sailun Atrezzo 205/45/16 tyres on them. All major suspension components have been changed as well (But the NS front wheel is running - 1.0 camber due to pothole damage..........I have been told this is within tolerance though)

However, when the car is unladen (with just me driving) and the fuel is below half a tank, the handling goes to pot! (Not that I'm bombing around) Any bumps in the road and I'm almost catapulted to the moon, and the car gets dragged off course by camber in the road. Fill it with diesel and the handling is much better. Reminds me of the old Capris where you'd stick a bag of sand in the back to keep the arse in check!

Any ideas? Many thanks in advance :)

battery in the boot maybe? Dunno if there is some issue with your setup? subframe aligned ok?

Could it be the dreaded "console bushes"?  Had bother with them on my previous 1.4tdiPD Mk 1 Fabia, and now on 1.9tdiPD, have had firmer Mahle bushes fitted.

Rear axle bushes would be worth looking at.

Hi everyone. After a little more probing. I think some of my engine mounts might have gone - hence the wonky handling (must be the engine shifting around under load)

I've noticed that when I shift quickly from reverse to first, I get a clonk from the front of the car (around the pedal box area)

I also get a slight clonk when changing gear up until fourth.

And if I 'rock' the car on around the bite, I can get the car to produce the same noise.

The gearbox seems to operate fine, apart from an occasional crunch into reverse.

If I rock the engine from the front it seems to move a fair bit on the mount on the LHS of the engine bay (not gearbox side) How much movement would be correct?

Which engine mounts would be the right ones for a 2007 1.9 PD 100? (There's 100s on them!)

Many thanks in advance.

Just re-read this topic....

Check your rear bump stops. Maybe switch to the shorter SEAT Cupra ones. Also, B4s aren't really suited to shorter springs. Really should have a full set of B8s on it.

B4's are fine with Eibachs, I've had exactly that combo on my 1.4 for years and the standard rear bump stops are just fine.

However none of this is relevant to the issue.

You're probably right... I was thinking maybe the shocks were shot. Though the B8s are spec'd in the full Eibach kit.

Try here http://www.oemepc.com/skoda/part_single/catalog/sk/markt/CZ/modell/FAB/year/2007/drive_standart/453/hg_ug/199/subcategory/199020/part_id/2538516/lang/e

Can try VIN in OEMPC above, to see if it narrows things down.

Also, could try your local dealer.
