Random oil leak

Featured Replies

My fabia has been dripping oil for years. I did have the garage kook at it few years ago and I can’t remember where they said it was leaking from, nothing to major, but would invoke taking the engine out to get to it - ie not worth it.

An oil leak got picked up on its MOT, not sure if same one or not. Trouble is, it seems very random. Drove circa 20 miles yesterday, where it was parked seemed to have quite a few oil drops where I parked it, yet when I did the return journey, no apparent signs on an oil leak overnight.

Any ideas?

What engine model is it and where abouts is the leak under the car?

1.4 petrol appears to be front of the engine on drivers side

If memory serves it's the 8 valve mpi isn't it? The crank pulley oil seal can leak on these and can be done with the engine in situ, although it needs the top mount removing and the engine lowering on a jack. Very easy to remove the top mount though.

Oil seal is part number 047103085

Just done some poking, it was the rear main seal I was told before that was leaking

There is no main seal on the drivers side. It's just the crank pulley oil seal in the timing cover as I said before.

The seal is behind this pulley...

Cheers I will get the garage to have a look next time it goes in... which won’t be very long as it’s got a list of work that needs doing

Huh!!? The rear main seal is behind the flywheel and bellhousing.

If only I knew where everything in the engine was and what the problem was likely to be.... I wouldn’t be asking on an Internet forum

Which 1.4 engine do you have? Is it the oil 8v engine (like pictures above) or the newer 16v engine?

The 16v is known to leak/drip from the oil breather module (drivers side bulkhead side/rear of the engine). I've got this engine in my old Octavia and it's also dripped for years. Local garage recons there is a seal behind it that rots/fails and is only available with a new module.

@bigjohn, I think your local garage are wrong. There are two o-ring seals, items 17, 18, both available separately. See here: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/octavia/oct/2001-252/1/103-103004/. On a 2001 car though, the separator could probably do with replacing, if original, it'll be at least partly blocked with sludge. New pattern ones on eBay for £30.

(Apologies to OP for off-topic, if yours is the 8V/MPI, it doesn't have this part).

@Wino Great thanks - very useful

NP. My point was that I think that your mechanic is talking out of his rectum if he said that the leak was from the rear main seal!

Just checked their older posts and the engine is definitely the 8 valve mpi.
