Strange sound on cold start up

Featured Replies

Hi,

My 2003 VRs makes a noise like the exhaust is blowing when I start it from cold, this seems to tie in with the initial revs being at 1400rpm at tick over. This lasts about 10 seconds and then the revs drop to 900rpm and the noise does not return when I rev it or at any point during driving. The car is that quiet on normal tick over that you have to concentrate to tell if it is running!! Anyone encountered this before and is it normal?

Yep, been there had that, it is the secondary air pump which pumps air to the catalyst on cold start up for emission purposes and to heat the cat quicker.

If it is particularly bad and your car is in warranty still, get it booked in to the dealers, a little tip, leave it with them for two days and blag a Fabia vrs as a courtesy car!! I did, good fun and totally different experience than the octy vRS:thumbup:

if it is out of warranty then would suggest you live with it, won't harm the car but to replace I seem to recalll someone on here mentioning a figure of around

Yep. Absolutely normal mate. Has never caused any problems. Just let the car run for about 30 seconds on a cold start, and it won't bother you at all.

I have that same symptom too

I have that same FEATURE[/b'] too

Thanks chaps, living with it seems a good option, car is just out of warranty, has a secondary warranty on it but may not be worth the arguement. will see how it goes.
