Alternative wheels

Featured Replies

Can anyone see any problems changing my standard 2016 16" monte carlo wheels for some 6.0 j x 15" 38 offset alloys with 195 x 55 tyres?

Thanks

The size of the tyres for the Fabia III on 15'' wheels should be 185/60R15

The 195/55R15 tyres are smaller in diameter by 7.5 mm but 10 mm wider.

Thanks AG Falco

What tyres were standard on the 16" alloys?

Should be 215 45 16. I think it is marked on the back or the fuel filler cap.

This size is closer to 195 55 15 only 4.4 mm smaller.

Thanks AG Falco

Different Brands, Tyre Types, Tread Types so Summer, All Season, All Weather / Snow Tyres need actually measured side by side or put a tape around the circumference because the score on the doors are an odd measurement.

A 205/40 R 17 in the real world from Pirelli can be taller than a 205/40 R 17 from Dunlop and bigger than a 215/40 R17 with Wheel Protection from someone else.

Does that mean the 195 x 55 are the favourable option?

Skoda have the 185/60R15 listed as the correct size.

Look at the sizes listed on the back of the fuel filler cap.

If you have a size not listed by Skoda you should be informing your insurance company of a modification.

This is not to say that the 195/55R15 size is no good.

One of my cars has the wrong size tyre on it but this has not been a problem in any way for 9 years and 100K miles.

Thanks AG Falco

On my current Rapid which has 17" alloys, if I was to switch to 15"s then 195/55R15 would be the tyre of choice according to Skoda but on my last Rapid it had 185/60R15 from the factory.

If I input the sizes into a calculator online then it tells me that 185/60R15 is closer to 215/40R17 than a 195/55R15

In fact on the 1.4d Rapid and non-sport 1.0 models they seem to specify both

If ever you want small wheel and more tyre / sidewall look in the owners manual or online at the Manufacturers Recommended or specified Wheels / Tyres for use with Snow Chains.

They will be Type Approved Tyres for the car on Type Approved Wheels, no Insurance company / broker can argue with that.

Thanks to all.

I think this may be the safest way to go.

My insurance company did until I put a complaint in - I want to fit winter tyres but on 15" alloys this winter. Bigger sidewall for snow etc but they told me it was a modification and I would be charged as such. After complaining, they still class it as a modification but here will be no charge

Yes but they should have read the forums, the ones listing the Insurance Companies that charge no extra for Winter Tyres being fitted.

And the reason why, the customers are doing it for safety reasons, safety so as possibly less accidents.

They can say Steel Wheels fitted when OEM are Alloys are a Modification.  Not more desirable though for theft.

They can say Alloys instead of OEM steel are a Mod / Upgrade and charging extra seems perfectly reasonable.

Annoying. You are making the car safer, thus less of a risk.

The insurance company should give us a discount for fitting winter tyres.

They take the Pith, but many Insurance Brokers / Underwriters were named and shamed.

Delberhot, name and shame your Broker / Insurer maybe.  It is fair, praise those that act fair, and tell others of the chancers.

I quoted the ABI guidance telling them that they were one of the insurers that didn't charge for fitting winter tyres and there were no clauses or exclusions listed such as different sized wheels. It was a 17" alloy for a 15" alloy.

Now that's what I told them - I'm making the car as safe as I can during the winter to reduce the changes of having an accident and therefore a claim and they wanted to charge me extra to do it

It's Elephant but they are part of Admiral and it was the Admiral complaints team that responded to my complaint. They wanted £19.50 every time I made a change so when I took my plate off my Scirocco, £19.50, changed cars, £19.50, put the new plate on, £19.50 but when I kicked up a fuss they refunded all of the charges. They've also put a note on my policy that when I tell them I've gone onto 15" alloys and winter tyres there will be no charge

My last insurer were Quotemehappy and they never charged me a penny for any changes I made during the term of the policy - registration number change, tinted windows or tow bar

Some are fair enough with a Policy / Schedule Change.

When you have several vehicles and get a Speeding Fine and get 3 points you are maybe getting charged for a Policy Change on every Policy,

yet a Speeder with one Policy gets asked for £25 or £35 just once.

They are greedy ******s.

As it is you tell them of your offence and they are loading each and every policy then or on renewal.

As it is your are being penalised over and over again, you are only driving or riding one vehicle at a time.
