Upgrading wheels and TPMS

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I currently have the 17" 5 spoke SE alloys and am looking to upgrade to a 19" (non Skoda, aftermarket) set.

I am just making sure that the TPMS wont have any issues.

From what I understand, it detects difference's in rotational speeds, so once the new wheels were fitted I was going to reset the TPMS on the infotainment screen and was hoping that would be ok?

Thanks,

Dave.

Had both direct and indirect systems on cars in the past.

Indirect has warned of low pressure twice on BMW and Mini, no indication which corner, got out with gauge and identified which tyre, (never been visible to the eye) and either pumped up the tyre there and then or if close enough to a garage use their airline and then visist tyre shop for repair.

Direct has warned of low pressure once on wifes Nissan, no indication which corner, got out with gauge and identified which tyre, (not  visible to the eye) and fitted spare (Sunday pm and no tyre shops open). Tyre repaired next day.

But give me indirect anyday. If one of the valves with direct goes wrong its an expensive job and finding a tyre shop with the right kit and parts on a weekiend in the sticks could put you out of action, not a great idea if you are on holiday. Standard valves rarely go wrong and any tyre shop will have replacements.

As far as I am concerned warning of a problem is all I need. Even if the dash identified the corner I would still have to stop and address the problem so why complicate it with expensive valves.

Skidpan,

Yes, I prefer the indirect but do you think providing I reset after the 19" wheels are fitted all will be ok?

Thanks,

Dave .

Of course it will be. The car does not care what size they are, all that matters is the rotational speed is withing the set parameters between all 4 corners after you have reset the system on the dash.

But please make sure you check with your insurers they are OK with fitting alternative wheels/tyres especially aftermarket ones. If you don't tell them it will be a get out of jail free card for them if you have an accident.
