Puncture advice

Featured Replies

I have a screw lodged on the front left ( passenger side) shoulder of my 235-40-19" tyre. Pressure has dropped to 20PSI but stable.

My spare is a full size ( so they say) 16"RIM tyre.

Can I fit a 16" on the same axle as the 19".

1. If I can how long can I run like this

2. No speed warning on fullsize ( like you would see on a space saver. Motorway speeds ok?

Im assuming the side wall is much bigger on the 16" to accommodate the rime difference

ALL HELP APPRECIATED

It is "full size" referred to a base model. (And I think a base Octavia at that!)

It is not full size on your car and can only used as an emergency spare. Speed limited to 50mph, used only to get you to a tyre repair centre or until you get a replacement.

If it was supplied OE, it should have speed warning stickers.

Motorway speeds would be illegal and potentially dangerous, handling may be strange. The tyre pressure warning, assist systems, ACC, ABS etc won't work because of rolling radius difference. You'll have warning lights until you get the right size tyre fitted.

It is illegal to run mismatched size tyres on the same axle except in an emergency when speed and distance restrictions apply.

Tyre repair centres all around Glasgow or the UK for that matter.

Just because there is no 'Reduce Speed Warning'  50mph max on a Spare wheel tyre any driver should know it is the odd tyre out from the other 3 or does not match the tyre on the other side of the car.

Common sense needed.

TYRE REPAIR! depends how far in from shoulder as Kwik Fit have conned me more than twice. So no doubt the answer will be un-repairable.

Question

So why is there a "full size " in the boot well that's as useless as a space saver but costs £100 , so they said. I didn't pay that.

Can understand if they put the 16" ones in with cars with 16" rims , but why in my case not just put a space saver?

just the facts man , keep the cheek to a min

If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now that'll be the end of  it.

Yes the repair depends on the position because of safety of the repair, you are running with a screw in that position and with an underinflated tyre.

So you can run the unsafe punctured tyre the screw can come out of or fit the Spare which is for use to get you to a place of safety at a safe reduced speed.

It Saves Space by not being so wide as the Full Sized 19" or 18" or 17" Alloy and tyre.  But is not a 'Space Saver'.

Different total circumference slightly, width or rim and tyre and tread on the road, different compound, air pressure and Speed & Load rating.

Tyre on the tight has screw in the shoulder, the plonker driving it was complaining about the TPMS warning for a couple of weeks and yet the tyre was at 20psi when i checked it.

My screw is just right of that screw in the first trench or big groove in the tyre. So not totally on the shoulder.

Repairable ?

Possibly.  ATS Euromaster or McConnechy's worth a try, anyplace other than the Fast Flit dancing boys.

Only if clearly within centre 3/4 width of tyre by law. And then subject to further assessment (size, type of damage, condition of tyre, method of repair etc)

Because most repairers use a mushroom plug, the width of the mushroom dictates how close to the sidewall it can go, I think about 30mm min.

In your case, I think most places will say no, remember they could be liable if the repair fails.

Btw the price of the "temporary spare wheel" is the same as the "temporary space-saver wheel" (only available on 280tsi) in the price list , no mention of "full size".

It's impossible to fit your 19 inch tyre in the boot well, its too big

Scotland / Glasgow, Sir Tom Farmer maybe never got where he did just repairing tyres but Sir Arnold Clark did.

With the state of Scotlands roads the Tyre Fitters are doing quite well and can afford a few repairs and no need to take the Michael with every customer.

Some money in the Tea Box is always welcome.  No invoice, no VAT.

No invoice, no vat, no guarantee, no liability, no comeback.

Don't think that screw is the government's fault ski....

Pothole damage to tyres, unrepairable I would think.

True.  But you get all that at Kwik Fit.

Try the HQ phone line, try to get an Area Manager to talk to to complain, try to get the HQ to take your complaint.

I caught a fitter ripping off my niece, so my mate booked his car in for the same £100 Winter Service.

What a mess there was on that counter.

My point was no Multi National Tyre & Exhaust or Spring Fitting Centres are going out of business.

You might find in Central Scotland that some Tyre & Exhaust Centres are that busy making money the do not want customers hanging about getting tyres and exhausts.... Drop off the wheel / tyre, pick it up later.

If I cant get a repair , going to use Black circs and get 2 pilot sport 4s on 12 mths finance. £33 per month. Loved the pilot sports on my VRS

Tyre tread is just above 3mm on both fronts. I don't have the readies to buy 2 and don't think buying one new tyre is a good idea. Having 3mm and 7mm on the same axle. I know its prob ok to do that ,,, but the cruel winter is coming and if like last , don't want differing mm on same axle

Am I a daftie or is their sense in my text?

don't focus on inches of rim, but on diameter and width of tire
and even damaged is front tire, spare wheel is recommended instal on the rear axle

full diameter spare wheel
