2.0 tdi dpf regens too often?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have owned a 2.0 tdi 150 superb for a only few weeks and only did about 900km on it. I noticed on occasions that it has a high idle fuel consumption and asks to shift to lower gears (as opposed to it normally asking for higher gears all the time, when I sometimes think it's too soon). I assume this is when it's doing a regen of the dpf, but it's like the 4th or 5th time in under 1k. Is this normal or should I go to the dealer and get it checked?

On an unrelated issue, does anyone have rattling noise from the front windows when they are partly open? My driver's side one does this and it's quite annoying..  the window feels loose somehow, if has too much lateral play. Did not expect this on such a car.... My 17 year old Opel astra's windows are rock solid.

Cheers!

Are you letting the car finish the regen or do you turn off before then? (Interrupted = the fan is still running after you turn the ignition off?)

if you are interrupting the regeneration then it will try again the next time you drive the car and it is up to temperature.

My windows do not rattle.

Don't worry, they do tend to do more regens when new then less frequently after maybe 2000 miles.

There is also an auto regen every 450 miles or so if one hasnt been completed in normal use. The systems on these latest gen engines are much more sophisticated than the earlier diesel set ups.  There is a link to the self teaching guide for the EA288 engine on here somewhere. That outlines how the various engine systems work. For example a detailed description of the emissions control systems, the various regen cycles, the system for speeding up the warming from cold etc etc. Well worth a read if you are interested in how it all works.

I was advised, by one who knew on here, in the early days of my 150TDI to forget it and just enjoy the car. Good advice that I heeded and never had a problem. I was doing lots of short journeys etc.

Thanks for all your replies!

I am enjoying the car very much, best car I ever owned! It's quick, comfortable and oh so roomy! I was just worried about too many regens and the possibility of a very expensive repair... The car does still have over 4 years warranty, but I'm unsure how the DPF fits in there. My comute is about 15 Km each way, most of it at 90-100 km/h, except for the first 3 km or so of 30-50 km/h and the last 2 of city driving.

What I'm really disappointed about is this issue with the windows feeling so loose to the point that the driver's side rattles on an old, rock-paved stretch of road. I can easily make it move sideways just by grabbing it with my finger tips. It doesn't do it when fully closed, so it feels like it's guided too loosely on the sides... Do you think this could be an assembly defect and I should at least annoy the dealer with it? I could accept this from my old Astra (which has noises elsewhere, of course, but due to old age...). I also have a niggle with Android auto, that connects when it wants, but it mostly doesn't connect (connection failed): maybe it's my phone, maybe not...

Cheers

Annoy the dealer ! I have had two S3 and neither had that problem. Like many others I get some wind noise from the drivers window but nothing like you are describing.

+1. My windows are solid, as they were on the two previous SII Superbs. I'd definitely get it checked out - it certainly won't get better on its own.

There are lots of threads about Android Auto on here. Worth doing a search to see if you can sort it. Good luck.

If the 15km commutes are the only journey the car is doing then it seems inevitable that you will have early problems with the DPF and terrible fuel consumption from constantly interrupted regens.

Personally I think you should allow a regen to complete at least every 3 weeks or so.

Thanks again for the replies. Yes, I'm going to annoy the dealer about the issue with the windows. It's not normal that a top of the range vehicle has windows that rattle when partly open. My old car sure doesn't, nor did the kia Rio or Renault megane I rented a while back.

The car won't just do the 15 km comutes; it will do 1 long (200+200 km or 250 + 250 km) about once a month when we visit my parents or the in-laws (tomorrow, actually). Now that Gerrycan mentions fuel consumption, it did go up since I noticed the car doing this, although I did start driving it a bit more in the city...

Those long journeys once a month should be fine for your regens. Passive regen should occur easily. That is more or less how I used my diesel and I had no problems in 2 years.

If you get concerned at any time simply get the car warmed up properly (oil temp above 100C for example) and then go for a short drive somewhere that you can keep the rpm in the range 1700-2000 and drive for about 20 minutes to match the situation above.

Not only do you have a technically complex regen system but you also have the back stop that the DPF warning light (check your manual) is to "tell" you that, despite all the tech, you are getting blocked up and you need to urgently do just such a run and get the system back in trim. However, this is not the dreaded limp mode 'dealer' regen of old. It is an early warning that you need that longer run asap. Ignore and you end up with a double warning and a service regen at the dealer and possible DPF replacement.

But having said all that I repeat my advice to just forget about it and enjoy the car. Just respond if you ever get that first level warning light.

No issues with regen here, but yes - my drivers side window rattles as you describe. I'll be mentioning it to the dealer when it goes in for service in a couple of months.

same problem here with side windows on Superb  MK 3 L&K 2017. its like i'm driving a cheap russian car.

Guys , i need your advice. I had previously 2 skoda superb MK2 2008/2010 . i must say great cars. last August (2018) i have decided to change my old one wich has done 180.000 miles so ive decided to move to a next lev. So ive bought the one in descrption. bad move. I had endless problems with a 11 month old car. short story long skoda fixed some of them but 2 .

1. random oil consumption. so i can drive 5.000 miles without consumption and suddenly ''check oil lev '' lamp came on . top up 400 ml , drove 300 miles lights on again. top up another 400 ml of oil drove 3000 miles , no problem. i went to SKODA dealer , checked , NO PROBLEM .

2. often DPF regen constantly every 100 miles more or less. with my old one DPF regen came like every 400 miles. asked SKODA specialists, NO ANSWER

I must say that im doing at least 100 miles a day ( taxi) , and soon i can feel that its on regen , i wont stop the engine.

ive spoke with an experienced independent mechanic and he told me that oil consumption is on direct connection with these often regen. something is not working properly.

my car has done already 95.000 miles in 18 month, but i want to fix this problems before is out of warranty.

Any advice please?
