Key fob not opening the car

Featured Replies

My child was playing around with my key yesterday pressing all the buttons and now I can't open the car with the fob!! The light still rashes on the fob when I press the button but doesn't unlock!!

What do you think the problem is? Your help is much obliged. Thank you

Have you tried the spare key?

Have you started the car and run it for a while?

Was the car opening/closing constantly while your child was playing with the key?

From google it seems if the keyfob is pressed over a hundred times when out of range, the keyfob will then be ignored as the car only stores 100 next rolling codes. It then has to be resynchronized.

I'm currently tipping my house upside down to try and find the spare!

I haven't tried getting into it yet as I'm worried about the alarm/battery and not being able to lock it again..

I don't know if my car was opening/closing when he was playing with it as my car is parked 200m away from the house

You can open it with the physical key.  Why are you worried about alarm/battery? It is unarmed when you open and armed when you lock (unless B pillar switch pressed beforehand)

Theres a good chance the key will resync when you start the car.

Found the solution on Briskoda!

From the Octavia users manual

If the vehicle cannot be unlocked by actuating the remote control system then it is possible that the code in the key and the control unit in the vehicle are no longer synchronised. This can occur when the buttons on the radio-operated key are actuated a number of times outside of the operative range of the equipment or theb attery on the remote control was replaced.

This means it is necessary to synchronise the code as follows:

• Press any button on the remote control.

• Pressing of the button means that the door will unlock with the key within 1 minute.

I've just tried this and it didn't work unfortunately

Before the keyfob can be used, the car must "learn" the keyfob. Typically holding down the "learn button" ("learn switch") for 10 seconds erases the receiver's memory of every keyfob; then letting up on that button makes the receiver go into "learn mode". Typically, pressing both the lock and the unlock button simultaneously on the keyfob makes the keyfob transmit its unique secret key to the receiver. The receiver -- in learn mode -- memorizes the keyfob serial number(s) it hears as authorized keyfobs, and also memorizes the secret key and the current synchronization counter N. After everything is quiet for 10 consecutive seconds with no button presses, the receiver times-out of learn mode and goes into normal mode.

After that, that receiver -- in normal mode -- is now synchronized to the keyfobs.

Tried starting the ignition but no lights appeared

Simpler explanation, Press any button, then open the car physically with key within one minute, the key will resync

Car battery may be flat, if you have a multimeter, pop the bonnet and check the battery voltage is greater than 12 volts.

Recharge the battery if flat.

If not flat, then lock the car. Then press the keyfob and unlock physically within one minute.

No multimeter! Do you think my son pressing the key out of range has done something to the battery?

When you open the car, does anything work? Interior light, sidelights, radio?

No, not any of them

Your car battery is flat or dead.

Battery currently charging. Is this a sign battery is on its way out?

I can't figure it out! Is my child pressing the buttons and battery linked at all?

Are your windows opened and closed by the fob? Assuming it was within range.

Unlikely, more the battery was already on way out, did you leave something on? Key fob didn't open because battery was dead and so couldn't. You automatically assumed your kid playing with the key fob thing was to blame. (Although now you may have to resync after battery is recharged)

Good luck, I'm reasonably sure it'll all be ok.

200m away surely is too far for fob to work. But obviously has caused fob to stop working. But coincidentally your battery went flat.  See if after you charge the battery it holds a charge.  I had to change my battery on my prev mk2 fl vrs after 7 years

Car battery charged overnight and now everything works as it should!! I didn't have to reprogram key fob as it worked first time. I'm just hoping battery isn't on its way out!! Fingers crossed..
