Keyless start kit... HELP!

Featured Replies

Hello!

I have bought a keyless start kit for my 2003 Fabia. It's a simple kit, it just uses a start button with a RFID tag and receiver to start the car and activate and deactivate the system. It plugs straight into the ignition wires coming out of the key barrel, if that makes sense... But I can't get the f**king thing to work. As far as I can tell, the system is providing the correct voltage to all the right places at the right times, but it will not start the car. It'll turn over, but it wont start (and it's not a transponder issue as far as i can tell). Has anyone done this before and can anyone help?

Thanks!!

Welcome.

Sorry no idea, it is all electrickery to me.

?

Can i ask, where do you store the key when you have used it to get in the car, is it in the ignition barrel after the steering lock is off?

Yep, the key stays in the ignition barrel to keep the steering wheel lock off. However, none of the connections are active on the back of the ignition barrel as i took the connector off to wire the keyless kit.

Cheers

I can't see the point of this device since you need to have the original key in the ignition with it's RFID in place to disable the immobiliser and the steering lock.

Have you also disconnected the RFID reader coil along with the ignition switch? If so it'll NEVER start.

Basically, the ignition barrel in my car is so broken that it has the tendency to trap the key. It'll refuse to turn, then refuse to give me the key back, so it's basically stuck in the ignition. There have even been times when I've had to leave the key in the car, and lock the car with the spare key because I couldn't get the key out. So basically you take a key and transponder chip and leave them in the ignition, disabling the steering lock and immobiliser. I did end up getting it to work and I'll post some photos once its all installed!

It sounds a bit of a faff and I just bet your insurance company will be delighted.

Why not just fit a new ignition lock barrel?

Ha. Like im going to claim on my insurance if it gets stolen :/ Because I don't really want to mess about with getting new keys and whatnot, and keyless is way more fun ;)

But seriously, it would be cheaper for me to just buy a new car rather than claim on my insurance if it got stolen.

I don't think that you need any new keys when you buy a new ignition lock barrel, as long as your key blades have not been damaged, you just provide your dealer with proof of ownership then ask them to order in a new barrel to suit your existing door locks.

The clever bit about the original system is, if you get bored while driving along the road and switch the ignition off and remove the key, and when the steering lock engages, you might be lucky to survive the consequences, with your improved system, if you or someone else switches off the ignition switch and removes the key, (if the barrel is willing), then you have an engine keeping running as the engine dead lock will not be enabled until the engine has been stopped, but probably the steering lock engaging, not a good situation.

What you should have done if you need this functionality, is lived with needing the ignition "on" section working, but a big RED start button and another maybe not so big GREEN stop button, going any further is not good!

I just wonder how many kits like this has been sold?

The thing I find absolutely incredible is that you can buy the whole ignition barrel assembly and keys secondhand on ebay for between twenty and thirty quid (I checked), it's probably less than an hours work to change it.

But think how awesome it will sound when you tell your mates your £400 car has keyless start!

Edit: special me moment.

I read 'Keyless Start' i never realised you got 'Keyless entry' as well other than leaving the car unlocked.
