EPC Error, RPM limited to 4000

Featured Replies

My wife had that error on startup and also stop/start malfunction error came up. After 4 attempts switching ignition on/off the car started to behave normal

She also said when the error was comming up the engine sounded rough.

The AA man came and diagnosed the car with 0 faults!

Anyone has this issue?

You don't say what engine you have however, I had the same issue on my 2013 Audi A3 1.4TSFI before I PX'ed it for my Karoq.

It turned out to be a sticky turbo actuator that needed to be replaced at £250. Original indications pointed to a complete turbo replacement at £1500+

Although the engines are likely to be different, they share similar DNA.

Its 1.5 TSI DSG

Yes I had a serious misfire when on holiday in August with my 1.5 TSI when pulling away.  The engine warning light came on and engine went into limp home mode so managed to get back to holiday cottage 2 miles away.  Called AA man out and when restarted the car ran ok but showed a misfire on number 2 cylinder fault plus 2 VW fault codes that the AA didn't know what they were.  Got back home ok and took the car back to dealer.  He diagnosed an ECU software fault and updated the software. No problems since.  The engine stop/start will also show a fault as it is automatically isolated due to the misfire.

Thank you

I will either wait till next time or book it now.

Trying to book to dealer with courtesy car available in less than two weeks is a challenge currently

It is a safety issue so use Skoda Assist, tell them so,  they can arrange the dealer diagnostics and repair and a Hire car if no courtesy cars.

Quite often can be a dodgy batch of fuel as I know of an Audi RS3 owner who couldn't put the usual Super Unleaded in his car and instead put regular unleaded from a supermarket and the car wouldn't rev past 4,000rpm until he put some better quality fuel in.:o

^^^ As you know all standard RS3 will run on 95 ron Unleaded Fuel as they are type approved and tested to, so that owner you know put in a bad batch of 95 unleaded or had a remapped car.

It might run crappish on Unleaded 95, but not restricted to 4,000rpm.   They do if revving in N though.

Normally when the engine is cold the ECU restricts revs to 5,500rpm until oil temps have reached safe levels, but this was the only time he put 95 octane in and even though the engine was upto temp it would not rev beyond 4,000rpm and he has the latest version with 395bhp (400PS) and the supermarket is in Banbury if anyone one wants to risk it.

Last model was using oil and the Media team had to get out and warm them all up before the 'journalists' took them out of the car park.

Then Audi had to do Software Updates.

Lots of 'Journalists' and others take a car, take as the tyre pressures are, take as the fuel is in the tank, and then maybe put more fuel in and that might be just whatever.

95 Super Market, 97 Supermarket, or Brand or 99.  Who knows as the next driver gets in, same with Used Cars & demonstrators.

What does EPC mean and what error does it indicate?

Edited by Gabi4

Electric Power Control.    EPC   Protecting the engine for you.

Can just be a Misfire and not the Exhaust Control Warning light coming on,  both can come on.

So 'throttle control',  Traction Control' etc etc Fuel Pressure a possible, bad fuel, bad connection etc

EPC on and staying on can mean in 'Limp Mode', Fault Code or codes should then be logged.

Fault codes might or might not get logged.  Misfires and not enough in a cycle.

The same happened to me a couple of weeks ago. 1.5 TSI bought in June.

It happened in cold start as i was coming out of my drive way.

Switched the engine off and on again and worked ok.

Got it to the dealer and they diagnosed a fault code for which they run an ECU update to newer version ( was on v.574 and updated to v.620 if i remember correctly).

We ll see how it goes. Quite disappointing though for a new car

which actuator exactly?

I think the member means 'Turbo Actuator'.   and that can be replaced.

Owners with1.2 TSI engines with the Turbo Failures or Actuators faulty have been told for years a New Turbo is needed as you can not get just the Actuator.

Lovely on Warranty, not when out of Warranty,

where actually Actuators were available, and not on back order as many were told, and difficult to fit and all the BS that main dealers wanting to supply and fit big priced items rather than being Mechanics / Motor Engineers and repairing things.

I don't understand the relevance with this fault and how it is derived.

If he has more info it would be nice to know

The issue was resolved about two months ago and I no longer own the Audi (PX on my Karoq) and I don't have the paperwork either.

From memory, there is a rod and linkage mechanism connected to the turbo actuator on top of the turbo housing. The linkage and/or actuator had become very stiff to operate over time.

When starting the car, the engine and turbo unit would carry out it's own test but would fail due to this actuator sticking. This would then  generate the EPC light and also the engine warning light.

It got worse over a six week period and the only way to get around it would be to stop and restart the engine several times until the EPC light would not illuminate.

The turbo still worked and the fault never occurred once underway, only when starting. I believe this was because the timing for the actuator to function was outside the limits and thus a fault would be detected.

I'm not saying that this is the same as the fault others have experienced especially as it was on the 1.4tsfi engine but this was the issue I experienced and the reason

fidelio, & i would not bother about the post about the actuator.

You have a new car there was an issue, a fault that can be dangerous in some situations.

Use your Warranty, the Manufacturers warranty,

use Approved Repairers, go to a Main Dealership or Call Skoda Assist when there are problems, glitches or faults.

Get a new Turbo with actuator eventually if this turns out being a 1.5TSI issue.

Time tells with VW Group, and we never know how their engines are at 2 years old until 2 years passes,

same at 3 years.

Never get landed with a lemon out of Warranty.   VW Group will just take the Michael.

Thats exactly what i did and i am not bothered any more.

I just wish it wont happen again.

The engine has not shown any big issues in the last couple of years that it is around.

Time will show if this is the best TSI engine VW has produced.
