280 Improve Air Flow Inlet

Featured Replies

If modifying your car many advise fitting a Racingline  R600 inlet as it has two air inlets at front of car rather than the standard having one inlet towards the front offside drivers side.

I note that the original  Skoda has one inlet furthest away from filter box. However there is an blanked off area right infront of the filter box in a similar position to the Racingline second cold air inlet.

Has anyone cut into this area thus giving a far greater potential ( less restrictive) air flow to the actual standard filter box.

Any observations or advice appreciated.

Than you.

Cut the standard air intake?

If so, I haven't seen/heard about it being done on this forum but I gather it's common practice with quite a few Golf R owners.  Though I recall seeing some posts claiming that any benefit was negligible.  I believe that a Dremmel is the usual weapon of choice.

Another common practice is to remove the snow grate from underneath the air filter, it just pulls up/out apparently.  Again, there's a few Golf R owners who have done this and like everything on a forum, a lot of anecdotal evidence on why it does/doesn't make a jot of difference.

Defo check out the various VW forums to see what some Golf R owners have done.   Hope this helps:

I've done both mods to my Superb 280. Opened up blocked off section of front intake with a dremel and also removed snow guard.

I also have an 034 Motorsports P34 intake and CTS turbo inlet pipe, but that's another story.

Any difference/improvement?

It is hard to say, as I did all of the mods together with the intake / turbo inlet as well as some tuning on the dyno.

End result with all of my intake mods is definitely more throttle response / quicker boost response, and louder induction / turbo noise as well.

Go for it! Should only take you less than an hour to open up the front intake and remove the snow guard. It is a common mod in the Golf R community as you already mentioned.

Removed the snow guard on my 280 a while ago. Didn’t notice anything

Considering turbo boost is tightly controlled, I'd be surprised you'd see anything but a placebo/noise difference, even with the filter removed (not recommended).

Many thanks all for your input, especially the Vid.

Although the difference may only be minimal then from the replies and common sense it does appear that it must be an improvement.

The present general path that air is meant to take ( combined together with the sharp tight bend into the turbo)  is convoluted to put it mildly.  I guess  that at the very least then throttle response must be better as when air is required it has a far easier and less restrictive path.  The standard offside inlet allows air to pas straight through towards the engine  and the induction tract is required to draw away from this flow at right angles.  The opening up of the nearside must allow air to go straight to the filter.

The more I think about it and considering the views expressed then it would appear that opening the nearside is logical.

Thanks for all your input.
