Potential oil leak, what part is this?

I was servicing the trusty 2011 2.0 TDI 140PS (CFFB) Superb this afternoon, just as she hit 150,000 miles. Fresh oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and pollen filter.

 

Whilst I was on my back under the car looking up at the sump plug, I noticed it was weeping. Actually further checks revealed the leak was from above.

 

I thought it was from this bolt, but it was rock tight, rubbing my finger along the black rod that extends from the bolt would suggest the oil is running down the rod (shown entering the photo at the 11 o'clock position and into the back of the bolt) from somewhere even further up still, out of reach and sight...

To put it's location into perspective here is the bolt / rod in relation to the sump plug, taken whilst sill on my back looking up...

There seemed to be more oil on top of a plastic shield covering the top of the driveshaft where it enters the gearbox too.

 

The car had a new EGR valve fitted by a Skoda main dealer circa 5,000 miles ago. I was able to see the shiny bits of it just as I lost side of the black rod, if that might be of any relevance.

 

Any idea where the oil might be coming from?

That's the oil return from the turbo and the bolt is a Banjo fitting which can be a pain. 

 

If its leaking down the outside of the pipe its coming from where the pipe bolts onto the turbo. (no sure from memory whether its on a little flange with a gasket)

 

I would wipe the bolt and see how it goes because these Banjo bolts are prone to leaking anyway, I had mine replaced under warranty pretty much as soon as i bought my Superb at 6 months old because it had a very small weep.(also for reference i tried to nip it up but was pretty tight)

 

It may be a ball ache of a job for nothing really, was there much oil on the undertray?

There wasn't much oil on the engine under tray. I think most of it was from when I missed the funnel when filling it with oil at the last service :D

 

I'll keep an eye on it, although checking it requires jacking it up and removing the undertray so it might be in 10,000 miles time!

 

I'll watch the oil level too.

Bingo, that bolt must go together with support oil return line when new EGR is fitted. New rings must be used ...

 

Bolt torque 40Nm,

Banjo bolt up to 12.12.2011 part number WHT003496 including rings,

bigger O-ring for older bolt N90978801 (21x1,5mm), bigger O-ring for newer bolt only as part of bolt (21x2,5mm),

small seal ring is the same for both N90715601 (17x2mm)

 

I guess the bigger O-ring is the only reason for new banjo bolt revision ... :cool:

Is that a stress crack above and to the left of the bracket (immediately above the bolt) in the top picture?

Could be!

 

If you look to the right of the crack there might be another bigger one.

 

Looks like they might be ready to join each other :sweat:

Is the banjo bolt definitely removed to replace the EGR?

 

If it is then I'll take it back to Skoda to be sorted for free.

I agree, did not see the second until now. I think that is a far bigger issue than the leak.

I'm not even sure what that part with the crack in it is. Will have to take a proper look and get some more pictures.

Have no idea what are you talking about ... :biggrin: The likely small crack ist just some stain, and it is the retainer of DPF filter and its rib to the retainer. No crack there at all :cool:

Check out the crack to the right of the one inside your red circle, the one you can see daylight through.

 

What does the DPF retailer bracket attach to, is it structural?

That is no crack too, just gap between the rib and DPF filter alone, just look at the other pictures, just three or four welded joints there :cool:

 

I guess you had the best view from underneath, the bracket just holds the DPF unit on the engine block, isn´t that clear from the photos? Again, there is no crack :)

Phew, good man, thank you!

 

Now I know the Skoda dealer definately removed the turbo oil feed pipe I'll be asking them to fix the leak.

Took into the dealer, they tightened up the 'turbo oil feed pipe'.

 

I did try that too, and couldn't get it to budge, but I'll keep an eye on it.

 

All done for free and got a courtesy car for the day.
