Looking for a new headunit/stereo thing

Featured Replies

Hi,

my first post so like first time in everything (first time driving, cooking, having sex) please go easy on me.

my first car, a Skoda Octavia 07 and it came with the stereo MP3 radio. Not complaining that it's bad in fact it's got an AUX option but my car doesn't have an AUX Jack fitted in.

i'm looking to replace the whole stereo with a more modern one like them android ones or touch screen but I have no clue which one would fit in my car. If anyone can either guide me to where I would find compatible android head units / Stereo thing I would much appreciate it.

Alternatively if anyone can instruct me as to how to go about selecting the right one then that too would be very helpful.

i'm clueless about these things, I can change engine oil, filter pads, brakes and such but no clue on replacing this old Stereo MP3 unit with a modern one.

oh and the car is pretty basic besides having reverse parking sensors.

no steering controls for audio or such.

again, apologies if this is in the wrong section or has been asked before

Any help on this please?

Is it the stream system you have? Also that one above is rubbish, don't touch it.

Yes it's the Stream MP3.

preferably looking for a simple swap but I don't mind going the extra with a new fascia if I have to.

Only reason I'm looking into these android based ones is because it would cost about £150 to replace my current head unit with something similar, no AUx, no Bluetooth no dab just FM radio and CD player.

budget wise I can go to about £300... Ma life savings man (;-;)

i'm looking at this one right now

http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV4&item=182752545848&category=174119&pm=1&ds=0&t=1533732052000&ver=0&cspheader=1

any advice on this? I just see that it can replace stream MP3 models so that's why I've linked it in.

any other recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Good choice, that was the one I was going to link you to but a different seller, it is an Erisin unit and I have had one for 18 months albeit the 2GB/16GB that is 4GB/32GB, good units, a doddle to fit as there are no external boxes for the CanBus it is truly plug and play, took about 10 mins to fit but you have to rotate the dual fakra connectors 180degrees in the OE connector to clear the back cage, everything else is simple, you retain the OE surround too.

Its a bit cheaper here direct from Erisin and you can make an offer £250 should do it https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-DVD-For-Skoda-Octavia-Radio-Android-8-0-Bluetooth-GPS-DAB-Wifi-3G-8-7826GB/113163907480?hash=item1a59183198:g:XXEAAOSwfSJbVaaB UK supplied also, quite a few people have bought these and they look factory when fitted.

Thank you very much. I was a bit troubled when I saw the connectors on the image but if it's just a simple rotation then I should be okay with that.

and yeh if it's cheaper going direct then for sure I'll give it a go with the 250 price and take it from there.

erisin I've heard a lot bad about but I'm assuming there's the whole 1 year warranty and guarantee stuff so I'm not too fussed.

once again pal, thank you.

With that budget you can get a branded touschscreen double-din with CarPlay/Android Auto, if you're not a fan of the Chinese 'VAG' stereos

O.o I know but it's a hassle trying to fit them on. I just want to do a simple swap without the need of buying a different fascia, the harness and then adopters etc.

if you can recommend one that is branded, touchscreen, within my budget and is a simple swap for the STEREO MP3 headunits then please do as I've not come across any yet but my search has been only limited to eBay and Amazon thus far :/

Generally to fit a non-oem stereo you just need a fascia kit that comes with the adapter so a new stereo can just slot in
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/zv8AAOSwtGlZCdQE/s-l500.jpg

I cant comment on any good ones as I have the stock Columbus unit, and a single-din bluetooth unit in my MK1 :P

Hard to find a cheap, quality touchscreen unit

;D

it's alright man. I've honestly tried looking.

Initally I just wanted a new unit with AUD and Bluetooth but that was gonna cost be about 100-120 with all the fittings etc.

so I figured I'll scrap the AUX and grab myself one of these android head units with the bluetooth and mirror option things, assuming they work the same as aux with the same sound quality.

If you get a cheap eBay unit your quality might not be as good, generally they use cheap digital to analogue converters. They can distort and clip a bit at high volume.

I searched a lot before, one that I really liked was an Xtrons unit. You can connect their bluetooth OBD scanner and it shows you all manner of car stats on the radio as well!

@T2000

just a quick question again mate,

whats the sound quality like on these head units by Erisin? Also, I see there is a AUX audio option listen on the specs but it says R\L and I don't know if that means yes or no.

Hi folk,

Sorry to  muddy the waters here but MhdNomy is like me in that he drives a Mk2 pre facelift Octavia and just about every single one of these Android Head Units say they're compatible with models from 2009 onwards ...IE the Facelift Mk2 Octavia so will any of these actually work in the older cars at all.

You can use USB as AUX in or an SD card for music, you can have an analogue input as well, what is it you are trying to input?

I find the sound is better than the Bolero it replaced, there are equaliser and sound adjustments.

@labman1001Mine is a PFL, there have been a few people on FB that have fitted these to 06/07 etc.

Music, movies etc

and you can use UsB as AUX in?? That's a first but I'm guessing that's possible Coz of android.

in terms of fitting it states that it does replace the STEREO MP3 and they are all the same size even in the face lift ones.

Ive sent over an offer of 250 yet to receive a response but once I'll get it I'll be able to comment on fitting for the non face lift model of cars @labman1001

Yes if you enable USB tethering on the Android phone you can set it as a storage drive so it will act like a USB device, not really needed though as you can stream music/video via the Bluetooth but I use a 64GB SD Card for movies and music plus you can put Spotify on it and tether your mobile data via the wireless, I have an app called Macrodroid on my phone that when I enter the car and it connects to the headunit via BT the app auto launches my phones wireless hotspot and the headunit auto picks it up and connects, when I leave the car and the BT shuts down the app shuts off the hotspot and enables my normal wifi, quite handy as I don't have to take my phone out of my pocket and the BT calls are good too.

The two lower buttons the unit you have bid on are fake buttons they are covers for the SatNav SD card on the left and your own media SD Card on the right, you can also get a cheap ELM device for the OBD port and this will connect to the HU as well as it comes with Torque Pro built in, it does an awful lot of stuff.

Another handy app is Zinradio which is like DAB but you don't need a DAB aerial.

When you get it you can change the boot screen in factory settings to Skoda and also use a Skoda logo on the wallpaper background when it's running, you will also have to go into factory settings to change the opening of the doors around as it's set for left hand drive, all other functions like AC and reverse sensors will auto show on screen, the passcode for the factory settings is 3368.

I would also plug in a USB charge cable and route it to the upper or lower cubby as it's handy for charging etc.

If there is anything you need help with when you get it just ask, you will find a lot of things to play with ;-)

Okay so I finally have it!!! It fits perfectly @labman1001 in my pre face lift Skoda, it was a simple swap for the Stream MP3 stock radio.

and ngl so far I'm enjoying using it!

howver, how da hell do you get the normal FM/AM radio to work? I've plugged my radio connection in the back but it just keeps giving me static feedback no matter which station not even capital or owt?

also, what other kind of good stuff can I get upto with this? Wifi seems pretty amazing too.

Any help, much appreciated @T2000

Not sure on the radio, did you connect the double Fakra connector up and rotate it? If not it may have got knocked out when you pushed it back.

Some good apps are ZinRadio, TVTap, Macrodroid for the auto Wifi Hotspot, Spotify, YouTube, Waze if you don't like the IGO Nav, Torque pro, Google Maps, Alexa app if you have Amazon.

I didn't get a double fakra connector with it, I only have a single fakra connector ?

Also, I can't seem to play songs via the Bluetooth through my iPhone ? It connects and shows are paired but no sound?

I'll the connection on that fakra again Coz it did need some pushing in when I popped it back into place so it could have come off.

also is there a way to like mirror my iPhone to this system?

Lastly, how long should I expect it to last ? XD

you said you've had yours for almost over a year so is it still functioning the same?

UPDATe:

after checking he connection I can confirm that I have officially broken the fakra connection. The wire has come away from the connector and the White thing (connector) is stuck to the headunit

any advice? Lol @T2000

Fakra tingz

For the radio if your car only has a single you can get a single to double Fakra connector of the likes of EBay for around a fiver.

There is an app in there called A2DP if you fire that up you can play BT music off the phone.

You can mirror IPhone with a USB cable.

How long will it last? How long is a piece of string, mine is working the same as day one, maybe a little slower as I have it loaded with stuff.

I've had mine 18 months now.

Ah okay cool. I'll get that app running.

one last thing, should I bother repairing or just simply replacing the fakra connector? Which is more ideal and easier to do? Coz it's broken and I don't know where to go from there

How did it break?

I'm assuming Coz I pushed it in and it prolly snapped, I just pulled it back out and saw it the wire separated rom the connector... Oops :/

I did mention about rotating the connector 180 degrees, i nearly broke mine that's how I found out.

Did you swap the door icons over?
