Which diesel engine oil ?

Featured Replies

I know this is a common topic and have hunted the forum with varying answers but nothing conclusive,so I thought I would stick up a post.

About to buy oil & filter for my Superb CR140 diesel.

Looking back my invoices, the dealer has used Shell Helix AVL 0W-30 at my last service  https://www.shell.com/motorist/oils-lubricants/helix-for-cars/helix-fully-synthetic/shell-helix-ultra-professional-av-l-0w-30.html

Seems fuel efficiency is driving the use of the 0W oil as it I slighter to pump round when cold, and I wonder if it has anything to do with the emissions 'fix' which my car currently has...

I know most folk seem to use 5W-30 (with VAG spec 504/507 being the most important factor) but wondered if others use 0W-30 rather than 5W-30 ?

Anyone have a particular recommendation for oil manufacturer ?

For oil filters, I am just looking at MANN filters from Euro unless there is something better to consider.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tasman,  have a 1.6 TDI Greenline II 2011 with the amazing 204535 miles mark and it runs mint on THE SHELL HELIX which you've mentioned above, the 0w-30 one.  I do use the Mann filters myself and I am very pleased with the performance of the car and I get about 56 MPG on motorways considering I push it fairly hard. I do recommend you to use this oil as my  car has been running on it ever since the 70.000 miles mark and the engine does run at 120 MPH in Germany for hours and hours without no issues whatsoever (24 MPG though at 120 MPH lol).

Hi Mate,

Shell Engine Oil (Helix Ultra ECT C2/C3 0W-30 - 5Ltr)

The theory is a 0w-30 will return slightly better mpg but in real world use it would be hard to tell any real difference. 0w is technically better on start up than a 5w but in the UK climate it makes little difference. So 0w-30 or 5w-30, either or is fine.

We do an oil and filter service pack (mahle) just put your reg in here https://www.opieoils.co.uk/

Cheers,

Guy

From the service manual: for the 140 bhp engine, only 507 00 oil is specified regardless of whether the car is on fixed or variable interval servicing. There is no mention of a recommended oil weight. The owner's manual doesn't mention oil weight either.

In colder climates, a 0W30 would be expected to offer better protection at startup since it's a little thinner and can get in around the engine faster when cold. Both 0W30 and 5W30 should perform near identically when warm.

I use the same oil that the UK's franchised Skoda dealer network uses, Quantum (VAG own-branded Castrol).

It is 5W30, readily available online and is £25 for 5 litres delivered to your door.

I just ordered some on eBay from a Skoda dealer in Scotland.

I service my Superb every 10,000 miles, she's now 8 years old and just ticked over 150,000 miles.

You might find this thread interesting...

I also use MANN filters, all bought from Eurocarparts.

Maybe it's a dealer thing as our newish petrol Seat is using the Shell oil where I expected it to use Quantum LL3. Means I need to keep 3 different oils in the garage now. Thankfully the Leon came with a handy 1lt top up in the boot. Plus I don't expect it will use any as it's a petrol rather than a diesel.

If it has a turbo, expect it to use a small amount of oil: it's impossible to create a perfect seal around the shaft of the turbo, so a tiny amount of oil will always escape the seals and get into the engine. The crankcase vent will also shed a tiny amount.

Fuchs, these days, not Castrol, apparently.

Yeah it's one of those TSI ones. But compared to my old PD any of our petrol cars thirst for oil is a lot less, lol.

I think the CR is a lot better too compared to the PD.

My last four Skoda's have had Shell stickers on the slam panel, perhaps they are filled from production with Shell oil.

Seems strange then for VAG to supply their dealer network with their own branded oil. Why wouldn't you just fill the cars up on the production line with Quantum and update the sticker?

Is it seen as a disadvantage commercially if you aren't able to recommend the use of one of the top 5 oil brands?

This is what I bought last week...

I believe Parks Motor Group hold a Skoda franchise somewhere in Scotland (Hamilton, Glasgow?)...

There are a few sellers selling it for a few quid cheaper but they're private sellers, there is too much fake oil floating around online so be careful.

Thanks for all the replies, sounds like 0W or 5W doesn't really matter.

Always impressed with the quick and to the point replies you get on here from everyone, very helpful!

Cheers

Dealers can and do buy what oil they want, they can get Quantum at or below trade which is a lot lower than you or I can. But I am sure the local Shell rep can probably beat that...

Quantum parts is a solely UK operation owned by Volkswagen Group UK to supply both dealers and other professional automotive workshops.

Last year Fuchs took over Castrol as supplier of Quantum oils and they blend the oils here in the UK. Who knows, it maybe the same place as Castrol did their blending.

Factory fill is likely to be multi sourced, just as tyres, filters and other bits are. Whatever commercial contract is struck this quarter.

I don't think Castrol blended in the UK when they were doing quantum, Castrol do not have any blending facilities in the UK. Fuchs is made at their blending plant in Stoke.

As above I get it from Parks from Ebay usually buy 20 litres at a time.
Then nip round to Parks Multi Car showroom in E.K. to pick it up.

I don't care ;) my brother done it for free + air/oil filters ;)

I'd want some pretty compelling evidence to justify the 100% price upper compared to the Quantum...

Is that group IV or V?

No idea, it's the one jafo linked earlier...
