I’ve bought a fabia

Featured Replies

Evening all

I’ve bought a 1.4 mk1 fabia.

What can I expect of this car?

It’s going to be my first car, insurance came in pretty cheap, it came with a full years MOT and it’s looking like a cheap car to run plus it had part service history etc. Friend who’s pretty clued up on cars checked it out for me and gave me

his seal of approval.

There’s a slight rumble coming from alternator belt which needs replacing.

Am I right to think these engines are chain driven and thus no timing belt?

Overall the car looks great for its age (2000) and I’m excited to get driving once I’ve collected it

thanks

There are two 1.4 mk1 petrol Fabias. One has the 8 valve engine and one has the 16 valve engine. The 8 valve engine is an old Skoda engine as used in the Favorit and Felicia and has a timing chain. The 16 valve has a timing belt.

Dumb question but how do I find out which one I have?

Thanks

One says MPI on the back of the car and engine cover, the other says 16V.

Then there's the diesel 1.4 which probably says TDI.

Good cars, though the MPI tends to be a bit fuel-thirsty, apparently.

Before it gets too wintry, check for door carrier leaks by looking for puddles on the seals at the bottom of each doorway, after heavy rain.

It’s an MPI

will check door carrier seals, thanks for the heads up

Timing chain then. The chains are notorious for rattling as there is no tensioner in the design, never heard of one breaking though.

Don't expect great performance from the engine, they are quite torquey but pretty slow. They are a tough little engine though.
