What gear?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I was reading another topic on here regarding the DMF (

) and noticed it mentioned that a point for early failure is driving around at very low RPM. Does anyone know how low that means?

I used to have a 1.6 Corsa SRI which would happily sit in 6th at 30mph at just shy of 1.5k rpm, but in my VRS I have to sit in 4th at 30mph to be sitting at 1.5k rpm. Would you guys class that as 'too low' revs for the gear which might over time affect the DMF?

Diesel's give a DMF's a much harder time due to the additional vibration and shock loading at low rpm. And of course Diesel usually has taller gearing.

My old 3.0V6 Mondeo would pull 6th gear at 30mph at just over 1000rpm and pull away smoothly like a turbine. Try 6th at 1000rpm in a diesel and not only would you start off boost you'd feel the vibrations through the controls and the distress the DMF is taking.

There is no easy answer it will depend what gear you are in, the rpm and how hard you want to accelerate.
