O2 sensor

Featured Replies

Hi,

just cleaned the 2 lamda sensors, reinstalled and engine running OK but orange engine management light still on. Does this suggest O2 fault is still active or does light need to be reset by software?

Fault codes don't clear by themselves, you'll need to use an OBD scanner to clear them.

Hi petroldave I have same problem I bought a new 02 sensor fitted it and it lasted a week before the pesky engine management light came on again.  I have mot next week and wanted an obd2 reader scanner to get rid of light for a day what's best u480 or u280 ? I read u280 is for vag cars like skoda and the other one is more universal?

Then I'll have to look again at it ?

I have petrol octavia kp04fwx 1.8t (not vrs )

Cheers for any advice

I've never heard of either of those, I have used VCDS for many years and would recommend it to any owner of a VAG car - not only for the diagnostics but also for the ability to tweak settings to make your car behave more like you want it to (within the limits of the VAG written firmware of course).

Oh ok cheers Dave I'll get one of them then

Just make sure you get a genuine one if you want help & support - there are a LOT of fakes out there, especially on well known auction sites

See here for a list of UK distributors

Yes Dave I've seen a massive list of them I'll pay a bit more and check feedback etc also uk only cheers for advice mate

For a Mk1 Octy (is yours a Mk1, abudabbi555?) you can probably use a third party cable and VCDS lite (freeware)? Instead of spending hundreds on full VCDS.

I wonder what car the OP was talking about?

Mistake

  • 5 months later...

Sorry to hijack but this is the same issue I'm having with my 1.6 Octavia Mk1 (2003).

Had a complete new exhaust with new O2 sensor. EM light on. Fault with front oxygen sensor. Reset. Light came on again within 20 miles. Tried new sensor just incase. EM still saying front sensor fault. MoT due and hoping it will stay off long enough to pass. Emissions well within limit.

But why is it doing this? Is it a fault with the ECU?

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony not positive but I read somewhere the mafia sensor might need cleaning or preferably changing as it can throw up false readings with regards to the 02 sensor?

Thank-you. Tried cleaning with the proper stuff, cleaned out all the air box pipe work while I was at it. The pipe from the oil filler neck to the air induction pipe has perished and had been 'professionally' repaired with insulating tape. Taped it up again and no different. Diagnostics are saying 'front oxygen sensor' again. If you MAF Sensor was faulty wouldn't it show up on diagnostics?

Skoda dealer has suggested a wiring fault but has warned that at £85 per hour it could be uneconomic if it takes a day or more to find the fault. He did then suggest I have a look at their current stock of new models.

AKA "I don't want this job; how about you buy another car instead of bothering me?"

Yes I suppose it would?  It's only something I heard I don't profess to know really. My light has been on now over a year. I got my mechanic to plug in the diagnostic tool to reset. He lives near me.  I took for mot and it passed but later in the day the pesky light came back on

Tell you the truth I Want rid of the car but can't afford a decent one yer and this is still running fine except for the light

Don't know whether a garage would take notice of the light if I part exchange the car ?

Exactly the same here. Just been MoT'd, no advisories, no rust, runs lovely. Had it appraised by Lookers in lieu of a part exchange and they could only offer me £100 because of the light. Do I really spend £1k+ having auto electrician go through the whole wiring loom only for them to say there's nothing wrong? I suppose one could argue that it's cheaper than £6k for a new car.

Yes Tony a thousand is a lot and that still doesn't guarantee it gets fixed . I avoid the car stealers anyway after a ridiculous quote a few years ago

Makes me feel like getting a cheap diagnosis tool to erase codes on the day of part exchange and then when they take it if it goes on following day it's their problem and no yours?  There's no way they can prove it didn't just light up of its own accord ? Whatever p ex they give will be well below private sale anyway lol
