Noise of the 2.0 TDI 150PS Diesel Engine

I have been patiently waiting for a 2.0 TDI 150PS DSG - SE L Drive to come up for sale. There was a very low mileage one recently, 2000 miles, Skoda dealer, absolutely perfect condition but on a test drive the engine seemed unusually noisy.

I know they're not that quiet but it really sounded ragged at the top of the revs in sport mode and at idle particularly agricultural.  It had warmed up. Engine bay seemed pretty dirty, rest of the car was as new.

 

I've driven a few now and thought they were actually surprisingly quiet so I was left wondering if I was imagining things - is there any reason an engine would be noisier than usual if it had covered only 2000 miles?

I don't know - rest of there car was minty fresh. Was slightly weird.

 

Sounds like 2.0tdi 150ps with 2,000 miles when the bonnet is open.

 

Who was it first registered to a Little Old Lady called Mrs Hertz or M/s Sixt.

Have you asked, and get that in writing..

What was it, a Courtesy Car for Skoda / VW as others waited on their new cars, or do they say it was a Ex Demonstrator / Management car or Hire car?

Have they said a Motability Car returned early?

It was 24/7 - a contractor for taking disabled kids to school. 

 

 

So a Taxi / Private hire car.     Not used much was it!.   

  Did a Briskoda member with a Yeti with more Go Go maybe have that in their fleet?

 

It would not be clocked, that can be checked, but was it ever damaged & repaired.

Not through the Insurance so not on a HPI check,  Skoda Approved Used car Checks...

It was all clear on the HPI. Beyond that I don't know what you mean, Go Go?

 

 

Hard to tell from a video clip.  I recall the 150TDI in my Superb and Leon being hushed and quiet, particularly when they were new/low miles.  Though both engines/cars got noticeably louder when they got past 15k miles.  They are IME the best TDI units Skoda offer.  

 

If you're on here asking this question then there's some level of doubt in your mind, something niggling away.  That for me would be enough to simply walk away and keep looking.   The car could have a clean history and be mechanically sound but if you buy it and it turns out to be a lemon you'll only regret not listening to your initial gut feeling. 

Another thing....could the car have being doing a DPF regen whilst you were on your test drive?  That makes the engine a little noisier, lumpy at idle etc.

No it wasn't doing a regen. 

 

Anyway, I walked away as it didn't feel as good as the 2000 or 6000 mile cars I had driven.  

 

I guess I'd describe it like driving a 1980s Transit van. Not quite that bad but that thought had never occurred to me before on any test drive.

I think you made the right decision.  I think your first impression is always the most accurate (and if you were wrong then you'll never know anyway :D)

I'm glad I didn't buy the previous ones based on my gut reaction - one had been in an undeclared accident and the panel gaps were all off on the bonnet and front pillars. 

 

I suspect I may be waiting a while longer for the right one to pop up

 

 

 

An HPI checks the records, finance, Insurance / MID,  claims.

 

If a car is damaged in transit, or while leased and repaired, say a Body Shop have a Courtesy Car a Yeti, and they repair it and no 'Insurance' claim is on record then there is nothing on the HPI.

Say a Dealership gets flooded and cars damaged and repaired, there might or might not be record of the cars repairs, depends if the HPI sees record of that.

Before I got my current Yeti 1.4 petrol, the garage offered me a test drive in a brand new delivery mileage 2 litre diesel Yeti in Quartz Grey, might have been an S or SE spec. I drove that car in and around Glasgow and onto the M8 and personally thought it sounded like a tractor, much noisier than the Octavia 1.6 TD I was driving at that time. Engine was powerful enough and the car itself drove well enough apart from the brakes which barely worked, maybe too new! If that was typical of how this engine sounds in a Yeti, it is going to be noisier than the same engine in an Octavia or Superb.

Oh buggar. So did I really find exactly what I wanted and it turns out I don’t want it?! I thought the other diesel yetis I drove were reasonably refined so I was puzzled by this particular one.

 

Ive never wanted a diesel but I want the auto DSG. I don’t want a manual petrol but I do need a yeti.

 

only similar thing I’d consider would be an Audi Q3 but they’re about 7k more and use the same engines.

So what's wrong with a petrol Yeti with DSG?.... loads of them about.

The 1.2s? They're really slow.

Have you driven one?  I couldn't describe mine as slow.... admittedly we're normally only two-up,  and I'm not a "spirited" driver these days... but the 1.2 is turbocharged and pretty nippy when it has to be.  And there's always a 1.4.......

If you are not finding a Yeti have you looked at a VW Tiguan, Touran or even a Caddy, or a SEAT Ateca?

Yes I have tried them. The 1.4 is a manual unfortunately. 

Mine is certainly no slouch but when I first had it I had to keep looking at the rev counter to see if the engine was running 'coz it was too quiet :wink:

I don’t really think the Tiguan is worth the money. It’s ok. Bit like the Q3, it’s ok. I’d be happy enough with one I’m sure but they’re a lot more expensive for something that isn’t much better.

 

A touran or ateca just don’t do it for me. The caddy is the little VW van right? That’s what I want to avoid. 

 

I just want a 2.0 tsi petrol DSG yeti. Is that so much to ask?! Haha

 

Thanks for the suggestions. It’s difficult, I basically need a small van for work but hate vans. I like BMWs and have always had them - driving anything else feels a step down.

 

I’m 45 years old and currently driving my mums 15 year old old Nissan micra 1.1 auto as a go between -I’ve had it for two years now and to be honest I might look like an idiot driving it, but it’s amazingly capable.

 

i cat believe I’ve just said that..

 

the yeti for me is a sort of anti cool utilitarian vehicle. I’m just not sure it matches up to what I want it to be at the moment.

 

things like the BMW X1 I also dislike - horrible shape. 

 

Pffft I might stick with the micra.

A VW Caddy Life or Caddy Maxi Life come with rather good engines and practicality, the engines and gearboxs you are looking at and yes there are Caddy vans, but then there were Yeti that were Vans as well just not in the UK and many think they look like vans.

Ah yes I know the vw caddy life’s - not for me looks and proportion wise.  

 

I should say the yeti yeti size works for me I,e. Small but with good load space if required. 

 

I dont wasnt to go down an estate estate car route.

 

my last car was an immaculate 1990 e30 325i touring - I’d probably like an oktavia estate but again I can’t quite bring myself to spend that money on something quite so characterless.

I had an Octavia prior to the Yeti.

It was however a Vrs went like stink and a huge load area, I did 60k+ in 3 years. Stepson has it now its still going at 200k.

Was very good at eating front tyres....
