Panoramic Roof Leak - DIY solution?

Featured Replies

Right, rear driver side footwell is sodden. I didn't realise for ages as I had rubber mats and despite the water getting under it, it just wasn't visible - and who climbs in the back for a change?

I've read loads on here and found some great posts about this and various solutions but they all seem to involved getting it fixed under warranty / by a dealer and I am going to try and DIY. I took mine for a minor service today and the skoda garage told me Skoda had advised they should take the whole pan roof off, 4 hours, £400 minimum. I don't trust them one bit.

I was hoping to tag this on to the service but given it's not been solved and my service book is all stamped up to date I am now a bit stuck. Do I pay someone else to have a look or do I try and fix it? Well I'm going with the latter.

I found the body work manual on these forums, here again should anyone want - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6mvh3pqryshv3rp/AAAYSoCsp-vVWz-h4ko4QoAha?dl=0&preview=Body+Work.pdf

I can easily locate the front drain tubes for the roof at the top and I am going to try and stick some wire down and clear them out, or possibly give compressed air a go. They aren't draining as they should as water pools at the top - and I can see water entering at the front of the car, drivers side roughly where the '3' is in the image below. I can only assume though as the front carpet isn't really wet at all that this is not the source of the problem (albeit a very similar problem waiting to happen). If this doesn't work, I will pop the trim off and clean the valves as suggested in the manual above (and picture below).

Sorry, I'm getting to the point - does anyone know how or where to access the rear drain tubes/valves? The glass is in the way of them at the top, and the manual suggests taking the rear bumper off; I am not able to do this! Short of trying my best to blindly get some wire into a small hole like a drunk trying to get their key in the front door I don't know what to do - has anyone found a way to do this? The image suggests they are accessible from the inside of the car, but I can't work out what I need to take off to get to '6' in the pic.

The car is a 63 plate and looking at the debris in and around the roof I don't think it's ever been cleaned, or greased by anyone at Skoda. I only bought it 2 years ago.

Any help would be welcome. Sorry if this would have been better on another post, but none of them seemed to be active. If I do get this solved, I am going to work out how to grease/lube the roof and I'll share a step by step maintenance guide.

I don't have an opening roof, but good luck with your endeavours, and thank you for the link to the body manual.

Hear Hear.  A big thanks from me too.

And thanks for the tip to find the other manuals.

I had to check wether hear hear or here here.

Perhaps look in the rear light cluster access panel, inside the boot?

Oh and be carful using wire as I doubt the drain tubes are a single run and could have connectors, elbows etc so you may inadvertently disconnect something.

Im surprised the roof would need to come out as per the dealer suggestion; surely dropping the interior roof liner would allow access???

I just had had to have our mk4 Golf sorted for a similar issue but for the rear N/S drain tube. It had disconnected at a join near the C pillar and was running into the interior near the seat belt. Glad to see that after 15 years these issues have been engineered out

To give you an update, I ended up taking the car to an independent VAG specialist for a sunroof service. I could see a lot of grit and dirt in there, not much lube/grease and it was starting to make a bit of a grinding noise. I figured get them to do that and clear all the channels, problem solved right?

Well... They said they checked all drains, all fine. Plus greased the runners. I assumed then, all would be well and good.

Then I found footwell water again. But finally today after a lot of tinkering and blasting the car with a hose I have found the issue (I think). I noticed water entering on the passenger side, just above the bonnet lever and looking at the diagram above it's clear it's where the lower drain valve is. So I'm thinking this is blocked. Annoyingly this was supposedly checked by the specialist I took it to, but now, it's clear as day. Pouring water into that drain causes a lot of water to enter the car. It's only when I read that water always gets to the lowest point that I understood that it could be getting in at the passenger side. I nearly always park facing downhill with the camber causing car to lean to the driver's side. I'm annoyed as I reckon I could have solved this issue myself, but hey ho. I paid the garage to fix it, they haven't, so it's going back... And from the receipt is states they checked this valve so that can bloody well do so again!

Having a similar issue - is your situation resolved?

Not resolved :speechless:

Garage replaced LFS drainage tube on roof. Seemed to have solved issue. No new water ingress, however after drying car as much as possible and removing as much condensation as possible, lo and behold... still water starting to gather in footwell. Not a lot, but enough for me to still think it's a problem.

Thank you for update and sorry to hear it’s still not resolved.

Golf Alltrack with Pan roof seems to have issues also. Will see what happens once dealer calls back to arrange for it to go in.

I'm hoping they'll check pipes and valves initially which shouldn't take long.

Don't want to wave goodbye to a 4x4 with winter rated tyres for 1 - 2 weeks with snow a possibility in mid-Jan.

Rather than using wire I used plastic strimmer cord on my blocked sun roof drains (Mk1 Octavia). Less chance of damaging the tubes where they bend. To my surprise the tube had managed to come off the joint from the sun roof drainage channel and had to be pushed back on.

If you haven't already seen it check the Yeti forum out for this topic. Lots of info that may, or may not, be relevant.
