Have main beam but lost dip!

Featured Replies

Hi, any ideas on this would be appreciated!

As per the title, for the last week or so I've noticed that the dip beam would flicker off and then back on again very briefly whilst driving at night.

The main beam works fine as do the side lights, all other lights on the car functioning, Iv'e checked bulbs which are both fine, all fuses and switches too so looking like a wiring issue ?

I always have the fogs on due to the fact that it's all b-roads and high hedges down here in Devon so it may have been going on longer but maybe I wouldn't have noticed it, at the moment getting by on leaving fogs on and hoping that I don't spend too much time in the presence of other cars at night!!

Anyone else had this problem?

TIA Darren

@VRSONE - At least 99% certain the problem is with the dip switch. You can try squirting electrical service spray into it and working it about for 10 minutes, but you may well need a replacement.

just a thought; could the relay be at fault?

Could be, but im with Ken..

Almost a 100% certainty its the stalk switch full o' gunge.

Good soaking with contact cleaner and some exercise, itll be fine again another while.

Thanks for the replies, yeah I'm going to buy a new headlight stalk.

Having now taken more notice of when it happens it certainly does coincide with the use of going from main to dip and back to main beam, once they have come back on if I don't go onto main beam they will work for a long time but as soon as I forget and use main beam they stop working until I've flicked they stalk repeatedly and eventually come back on so I'd say that Ken is correct and that's where the problem is!

Many thanks for the input.

Could be worse, when the stalk in old cordoba went the same way, i had to spend a week on nights driving holding the stalk back in "flash mode" or i only had dips the whole time..

You could try a can of air that is used on computers, etc to clear out any sh-tuff that may be there. Then perhaps some suitable lube. Clean first, though!

Must be cheaper then changing the stalk without trying first!
