Safe boost levels for a K03s on a custom remap?

Featured Replies

Ok, ive tried searching and still see conflicting views for what is a safe level for the relatively small K03s turbo to be running with a remap. Im currently running a generic Jabba remap that peaks to 1 bar and holds .9 bar.

The engine has 25,000 miles on it now, has its oil and filter changed every 5,000 miles with Synta gold and doesnt touch a drop of it either in between changes. Basically I dont skimp on maintenance, if it needs doing its done properly.

Now since the generic remap and during the last six months of ownership I have added all the items in my sig. Now the question is; is it worth me getting Jabba to do a custom map for the car (it already seems to be fairly nippy and improve with every mod ive done without adjusting the current map)?

Secondly and more importantly, if I go ahead with the custom remap what are considered safe 'peak' and 'held' values of boost for the K03s?

All advice and help very welcome,

Cheers,

Lee

what i dont understand is i got about the same performance figures as you from the same rolling road with the same mods yet mine peaks at 19psi and holds about 16psi

then again when my car was done it had the standard downpipe/cat/system on it so maybe that will make a little difference, god i need this new turbo/manifold on to see if it makes any difference :(

Any advice on boost levels to run on the remap?

I think i'll let them raise it to 1.2 peak and hold around 1.1 if possible.

found a copy of a magazine containing dagenhams best the other day Lee, what can i say? Nice teeth!!

Lee, you have a PM.

PM read - many thanks.

Jim at Star Performance is interested in seeing how far he can take my Octy on the K03 - next mod is a BFOFMIC and modified manifold.

That sounds like it could be very fun and also very expensive  :D

Standard boost for the 4x4 is just .5 bar and around .8 bar for the 180bhp VRS as far as I know. Both engines are pretty much identicle internally so i dont see why the base boost setting should dictate one being better than the other after a remap. :)

Im beginning to think a peak of 1.2 to 1.3 peak settling to 1.1 and then dropping a little more, higher up is ideal but who really knows

Check with Mike at Jabba as he set mine to 1.25 max with similar mods. This was done quite sometime ago and its been fine. Recommend you get a boost gauge then you can check what you are getting or not as the case maybe.

Chris

Take Michaels advice, he pushed mine to what he considered the safe limit & the car did 2 cannonballs in that trim + many other hard miles. The turbo was retired at about 55000, still running fine when something slightly bigger arived.

Getting Michael to remap mine after the Blue Flame exhaust was fitted certainly made a difference.

One other mod to consider is to take the webbing out of the inlet manifold to aid flow, check with Michael to see how much it will help the small turbo, it certainly helps the IHI.

If you PM me your e-mail address I will send you the plot Michael achieved with the KO3

already got both but one isn't fitted yet :(

What manifold have you gone for Bengie?

ATP one, the only one i've seent hat fits the oem turbo. ATP also do the eliminator kits that work nicely with these manifolds ;)

ahh right! I was thinking of inlet manfolds rather than turbo manifolds. I was thinking of one of these myself but not sure if there's any gain if sticking with the K03s.

we shall see soon hopefully :)

also fitting the turbo from a vRS to replace my fubar turbo :)

I wait with baited breath.

Anyone else know about the de-webbing of the inlet manifold as mentioned earlier by Stuart?
