Gear display on instrument cluster manual box

Featured Replies

I have maybe a problem with the instrument cluster gear selected / recommendation in the top right corner. A lot of the time the gear display is blank, as the speed is increased
the display stays longer but is still intermittent. I asked the dealership and they said the display is only constant on automatic box and that it does not show all the time

on manual gearbox, seems the wrong way round to me.

I gone for the DSG this time, put all previous manual Skodas the gear change indicator was on constant with a little arrow showing to change up or down as required. To be honest I wish there had been a switch to turn it off as it’s pretty pointless and usually urges you to change up far to quickly.

It's mainly the princple of the thing, is it faulty? has the dealer lied to me?

Anyone out there who has a manual box Kodiaq?

My Octavia was a manual - and that only showed something when it wanted you to change gear, e.g. 4 > 5. My DSG Kodiaq displays the gear all the time, but that's because there is no other way to know what gear you're in!

My MY16 Octavia manual has the gear display on permanently with additional info when it wanted to suggest a gear.

Maybe it changed then... mine was a '64 plate.

Well it's me!!! I must keep my foot off the clutch pedal! The slightest touch and the display goes off, otherwise the gear display is on all the time.

I was about to suggest that maybe the clutch switch needed adjusting. The display is driven by the relative speed of the wheels and engine, so with the clutch pressed it doesn't know. It only takes a little press to activate the switch, just like it only takes a tiny press to put the brake lights on.

Yep as discovered it only shows the number when it's in gear

I already know what gear Im in so I don't actually need the car to Nanny me, but rhis is the way of the world and I think it's rules aimed at reducing CO2. It's a total waste of time, because I don't think anyone's ever changed gear when they wernt going to anyway, just because the car wants them to?!

That, as well as getting higher mpg even when doing so chugs the engine and stresses the drive-train as a result.

The owners manual has the usual contradictory advice and statements. In the section on changing gears it says "The gearshift indicator must be observed when changing gear".  Note the word "must" - that's bull****. It's a suggestion as to the gear that may give you the best fuel economy...

Elsewhere, the manual is a bit more correct. The section on the gear change indicator does actually call it a  "Gear recommendation" and follows with "The function of the gear recommendation is to help reduce fuel consumption".

That's one of my pet hates, our lass gets lots of time on the naughty step when I catch her doing this.

I played with this yesterday in my Superb 2 when caught up in some slow moving and boring traffic. It is different in that you have to really put the clutch in - three quarters of the way at least - in order for the gear indication to go blank. This makes it appear to never go blank even though it does actually do this. You have to really be watching and that's a bad idea when your eyes should usually be on the road.

I had a play in our manual Kodiaq today too, riding the clutch has no effect, you really have to press it, to the point of disengaging the clutch for the gear indicator to disappear.

This feature grinds my gears (see what I did there) more than I can politely express. Is there any way of turning it off? Otherwise it's a black vinyl sticker.

Working out whether it's worth paying to have that, the turn lights, the bleeping central locking, bleeping boot lid, turning off of the radio when reversing, etc. all switched off, or even if it's possible.
