Ignition key won't turn

Featured Replies

My ignition key won't turn, even to get the ignition lights on so i think something is broken inside the barrel.

The steering wheel still moves so it is not locked on with steering lock, tried the spare key and spraying WD40 but still no joy.

My question is if I get a complete ignition barrel setup with key from a scrap yard will it work without any coding needed?

Thanks

i think the answer is yes   BUT   you need the transponder from the existing key or switch the blades from memory the switch and lock and barrel are held together  with a grubscrew  there is a fair bit on here if you search,  removal needs the butchering the shear bolts, unless you are lucky they can sometimes be started with a small sharp cold chisel and taper nose moles

Thanks for the reply cheshire-cat, I'm going to try to get a complete set up with existing key from a donor car.  Yeah read about shear bolts and only thing that seems difficult about the job but read the hammer and chisel method is best for removing them.

If it's an automatic the key won't turn if the car thinks it's not in park... I know it's simple, but it foxed me for a bit.

All sorted, not bad for £20 for a used barrel and key from the scrap yard.  The hardest part was swapping the blade from the donor fob to the existing fob as didn't have a proper punch for removing pin and struggled with using a panel pin.

Reviving this one a bit if I may... Wiilydog, I'm facing the exact same behavior now. Was there any coding involved when you changed the barrel and the lock? Does the car unlock with the new key now or how does it work?

No coding required unless you are getting a new key fob as the immobilizer chip is in the fob and communicates with the ECU.  I ended up changing the lock mechanism but reusing the key barrel.  If you are use a key barrel from another car you can swop the key blade over to your old key fob so the immobilizer and remote locking still works.  I think you can also order key barrels to match your existing key from Skoda.

i had same problem, ordered 2nd hand barrel, all fixed and sorted now, issue was broken bits in the steering lock. Theres quite a few invaluable videos on you tube. None of them cover the full job adequately so Id suggest you watch a few of them ,, some relate to VW and Audi rather than Octavia as the lock is the same across the brands. . I retained the original key
